Hey guys, I'll try and make this simple to explain. I'm learning about different types of compressors and want to arrange my plugins accordingly and have come to a bit of a hault as there are some plugins that are hard to categorize I have managed to sort out the basic emulations ie; Opto, VCA, FET, then the compressor being emulated THEN another folder with the vendors etc but when it comes to plugins that are emulated on one or more different types of compressors (Klanghelm DC8C) I don't know where I should put them under. Any ideas or suggestions for categories please. Thanks, I'll leave some screenshots below

EDIT: Shout out to @5teezo for his compression and eq 'cheat sheets' that helped as a starting point, definately worth looking at.

EDIT 2: Another example are the Elysia Alpha and Mpressor Plugins...Where would you guys put them if you had folders like the ones in the images above?

You can put the same plugin in different categorie, I don't that with EQ, I got "parametric" and "dynamic", and for exemple the Pro-Q3 can be both so I put it in both.
If it's a plugin where you can choose the type of compression with a setting, you can put it with a different setting in different folder. I don't have a compressor in mind that offer that kind of choice, but for exemple you got one with a Opto emulation and a FET emulation on the same comp, save it as favorite in the FET folder with the FET comp activated, and do the same with the opto in the opto emulation. Same plugin but different setting for each folder. Like that you'll think about it when you looking for a specific type of compressor (I also do that with plugin who got multiple FX like delay/reverb/flanger/filter, they're in multiple folder with a different setting on loading according to where I add them from)

That may be what I may end up doing, pretty straight forward and simple.I have multi-effect plugins under 'sound design' at the moment but may end up switching to what you've done. We'll see what everyone suggests in the coming days...Thanks for your help

Exactly, and with too many of them, you'll end up not using some at all.
I would personally prefer to sort plugins by sonic character, not by technology because that's what I have in mind when choosing the right plugin.

It's actually not as bad in FL Studio as you think. All you do is hover over the category and it shows all subfolders, takes maybe 2-3 seconds

Simple solution: all dynamics in one folder. How many do you have of each kind???

yeah i remember fl is fast with that..but part a sub for each company.......only bundles get company name on c:vst/bundles/.....setting ! Before names to bring it on first top rank
    ---
i would put dmg and klangelm just in comp folder...so they appear as single plug under opto, fet,mu folders
    EDIT
so it would look like in ableton..ableton is more horder friendly a bit to reaper maybe heh heh..

Here is what my FX list looks like, if that can give you idea :
in each folder, I got everything organize by brand folder too. Some plugin that does multiple task can appear in multiple folder, for exemple the Effector from Image Line is in "multi effets" cause it got different FX, but it's also in "filter", "delay - echo", "flanger - chorus - phaser", with a different deffaut preset for each version (a preset that match the category). Same for channel strip, some plugin are in "comp - eq - combo" or can be in "equalizer" too, so if I want just an eq or just a comp, I can see those plugin too without having to look into multiple categorie FL-Fx-database.jpg

Crumbs that is WAY more in depth than I go. I work out what I use mostly and have one secondary device for everything I use. Everything else I delete. If ever I get stuck and find something is missing, (extremely rare as I know 99% of the time what I want and where) I will just re-install it!

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong but for me? instead of spending weeks on making everything look nice, I chose to spend time learning what each device did, what worked best for my way of working, then chose accordingly. This way I don't have to spend ages sorting through clutter. I know exactly what I need to use, and where to find it.

  17. Instead of wasting time going OCD and sorting things into little boxes, just do some recording and start using your plugins. Try different ones all the time and eventually you'll know which ones you like and keep going back to, and then you can have one useful folder full of things you can and do use. By that time, you'll know them all so you'll have no need to categorise them further.
Think of it as a competition. By the time you've dithered (no pun intended) about swapping your toys into different boxes, your immediate competitors will have finished a couple of songs and left you in the dirt, so prioritise what's important to you, collecting or producing.

It's all the stuff for denoize, and other cleaning stuff, like the Accusonus series, the RX7 plugin or all the X-clic/noize and other Wave stuff. Didn't know how to name all those kind of process, so it's the best name I found for that :)

ive got some harsh advice. delete loads of your plugins.

other than that, i usually categorize along the lines of dynamics, EQ, modulation, etc
or smash my head into the screen wishing VST3 wouldnt be such a cunt
