    Hi

Im about to get me a new audio PC based on Windows7 64 bit OS, and I´ve been looking for informations about tweaking my system all over the net with no result at all :dunno:

    My question is:

Is there any way you can tweak Windows7 64 bit so that it runs smooth without using a lot of resources on build-in tasks in the OS itself?

Tweaks like this was pretty common way back for Windows XP, hope its the same with Windows7

    @ Phloopy,

You should to have a look at the following program : 'RT Se7en Lite'

    'RT Se7en Lite' Official Homepage

It's a very powerful tool related to all kinds of tweaks for your Win7 OS ONLY ! (both 32 & 64 bit), and moreover it's FREE ! (You can make a donation, if desired).

At this time, I'm running a stripped 'Win7 Ultimate Edition' (x86 - 32bit) done by a guy and/or Team from Indonesia that uses some tweaks done thanks to that 'RT Se7en Lite'... and it runs very smoothly and flawless at my big surprise.
I've been a convinced 'XP Pro SP3' user for years, and I still like it (especially for audio purposes), but I must to admit that this 'Win7 Ultimate Edition' (Special 'stripped' version) is just... amazing ! *yes*

Here you have also some tricks that I found longtime ago on Internet, maybe they could help you in some way :

I run Adobe Audition, Reaper, and on occasion FL Studio. I've never had to do anything special to get any of this stuff to run on Windows 7. My computer specs are on my profile. Nothing particularly special about it, either. I've said it here many times, don't let the razzle dazzle and machinery get in the way of just getting on with it. What Lord Gaga said. About the only thing I spend time "tweaking" is MIDI interface connected crap, trying to get the least latency.

    ....

    It's simple.

    1. Uninstall, all crap programs you don't use
    2. Uninstall "windows features" you don't need [printer/tablet drivers, xps viewer/internet explorer/etc]
    3. Set your virtual memory for an extra 5-10 gigs
    4. In system properties [along with virtual memory] choose windows to run "best for performance". This will most likely disable the aero and take you to windows basic theme or classic theme.
    5. Get a program like IOBIT gamebooster. Why? Don't be fooled by "game" the program optimizes your computer for single program high resource use. It'll will turn off everything that the comp still needs but doesn't need that that program use [troublshooting services/communication services/SSDP discovery/Font chaching/etc]
    6. Make sure your computer is set to high performance in the energy/battery options in your control panel. By default this is always set to balanced if you don't change it.

If you do these things any other advice is rather moot and the only thing you have to worry about is running out of memory [only issue I ever have even with 8 gigs of ram]. And like mentioned above do a few things for tweaking latency on midi devices, however the tweaks to your system I perpose will kill most of the extra latency you should ever get because your not running all of the things that try to steal resources from it.

Also if your all about the resource use. Win8 uses roughly 25% less resources than Win7 on x64, and thats all around, not just in daws.

http://www.blackviper.com/ is the place to go. Take some time to root the site.
There you'll find a comprehensive list of all services with great explanation on what they do.
My Win7 64bit runs w/ 22 services in b/ground when idle, including s/card and dongle.

    D O N' T do that whatsoever!!!

Also increasing the paging file for 5-10GB is out of questions, especially if you get more then 8GB of ram.
Regarding this, you are better off setting a small partition just for paging.

Phloopy, it all depends on a pc you're buying. if it is older pc then you can tweak it by shutting down most of the processes.(Type msconfig and click on services tab ,click disable all or chose. Do not have any anti virus and do not go on internet(disable your network adapters in control panel)Have a different PC for your internet since too many things out there can F up everything ...You can have double system on one PC You will need two drives. Raid will help the speed.(2) Or You can buy the latest PC 2011 if Intel 64 gig memory at 2011 or at least 1600 speed Ram .six or eight core processor and VeociRaptor drives and or solid state drives and then you do not have to worry about tweaking except the internet that you can not trust, not to mention Anti virus programs get in the way of DAWs. Do not trust any and I say any tweaking programs since they will f ur shit up... THERE is no better advice even by Computer engineers... so there you go and enjoy ...
