I bought a new laptop recently to be able to work on my music remotely
    it's a HP Pavillion 15 with Win 10 OS

Unfortunately when I downloaded a couple plugins - my computer randomly made them dissappear
It didn't happen right away, the files where there for an hour, after that , they had been dissapearing and appearing again till they were gone forever

I turned off all the windows options for spying an unwanted files, also turned off the anti-virus but that didnt help .
I got one of the omnisphere releases and it was fine until i restarted the pc seeing that it slimmed it to 16 gigs (from 50) deleting random rar parts

another thing that got to me was that the disc storage did not change after deleting my files
so the size shows like they were still there..
although option "show hidden folders" didnt show em too

I'm confused af and I wish I could finally use this damn laptop to make music
any help is much appreciated :)

Probably Defender doing its thing. I have a pavillion too, never managed to turn off defender on the default W10 they give. Some third party tools might allow you to do it, I prefered to install an optimized windows 10 since those laptops aren't that powerfull anyway and it's better to not drawn them under the weight of useless crappy soft present in windows 10 family version (cortana, all their apps, appstore, etc, etc)
Had to install modified W10 Pro version to get rid of the sucker before even installation. You can find modified versions online, @taskforce gave a usefull web adress to that regard. Can't remember it. Or you can modify one yourself, if it's just a few tweaks.

Use Windows 10 Enterprise. (3-4 $ on Ebay), disable Defender, stay away from Tor and porn sites. Use common sense on other websites. Install warez only from safe websites. Buy your favorite plugins (when you afford). Make music. Be happy! Happy New Year! :mates:

I use a pc w7 laptop just for internet and watching tv/movies. Windows explorer crashed this one time and when I rebooted *POOF*, had something like over 70gb's of shit evaporate. Never mind all the other annoying weird shit windows manages to make using a pc hell, lol.

  7. Windows 10 is an interesting beast. You can do all the registry recommended changes and group policy changes on Windows Defender, but it still randomly can turn itself back on. Each time you boot, even if you have done everything that every 'expert' tells you to do, if you have done a defender update, it will likely re-enable itself randomly.
At least once a day, especially if you are installing anything from the sister site, before unzipping anything, go into 'Update & Security' in settings, then 'Windows Security', then 'Virus and Threat Protection', then 'Virus and Threat Protection Settings' and click 'Manage Settings'.

If you see this below, click and turn it off. I do a check daily because it avoids false positives. If I think I may be going to a suspect site, I turn it back on.... then off afterwards.

That's why I only update once when doing a fresh OS install and then disable updates entirely. Windows updates are overrated and tend to break stuff. If you know what you're doing and use safe websites security shouldn't be an issue either.

Go to Settings --> Windows Security --> Threat History

From there, scroll down to QUARANTINED THREATS, click on each threat and click "RESTORE". (check the file threat and make sure it's the file you want restored and not an actual threat before you restore, though.)

Then, go back to WINDOWS SECURITY --> VIRUS & THREAT PROTECTION (then, click on "MANAGE SETTINGS")

Next, turn off "REAL-TIME PROTECTION" and, to be safe, turn off "CLOUD BASED PROTECTION". You'll see a red X over the DEFENDER icon in the system tray (lower right-hand corner of task bar) letting you know that it's disabled.

**edit** check this out to disable defender for W10 1909:

  11. No argument for most updates. However, the 1900s updates were important for DAW VsT users. The cumulative i.e. Other than that, sure, it pays to look at 'what' it wants to update.

if your remaining storage has not changed then the files have been moved, as mentioned, most likely by defender or something.
see if you can find where they are being moved to. check defenders quarantine first, then failing that you can either check out file sizes to see if everything adds up (the hassle way), or use a third party tool to do this for you. i use windirstat for that, its great for seeing what files are stored where, their sizes etc.

I'd check the disk for errors too.

    1. Run 'cmd' as admin.

    2. Type: chkdsk C: /f /r /x
where C: - drive letter (change if needed),
    /f - fix errors (don't change it)
/r - check disk for damaged sectors (don't change it)
/x - full access to disk (don't change it)

    3. Reboot when asked.

Not only Windows 10, although is the trickiest one.
I still remember the browser plugin Flash times when MSoft tried to compete with some equivalent, don't remember the bastard name. No matter what you did configuring updates.. oops... it's installing itself again

Non-defective Windows 10, or any other sound Win version does not delete any user installed or created files, unless they are infected.
And your 'computer' does not make them randomly disappear.
But the piece of defective hardware that can make some files 'disappear' is HD (SSD even more likely). On very rare occasions the culprit might be defective RAM.
Antivirus software does that on purpose, as part of its job, but also only the files that are infected. But it keeps logs on that.
The most probable thing by far is that your computer is infected.

They sent me a link to download an ISO for Windows Enterprise, because the one from Microsoft website is only 100 days demo, which once expires, you can't activate or something. They also sent me a valid (till now) serial. I am happy with it. Much happier than with my previous legit Win Pro 10 that seemed worse with every update, that also deleted files randomly from my PC (although it might have actually been the drive's fault, but Microsoft seems easier to blame). :disco:

You can disable automatic updates. Not joking here.
Of course there're more things but nothing else worthy for 99% of the users.

Actually this is a well known and reported big time f*ed up bug of v1804 (or v1809) version (now corrected with updates). Happens to few people but, obviously, extremely major bug.
Not saying is your case but could be.

That's right! 1809 brought the first issues to my sistem (Ryzen 2700x, 32gb ram 3200, Asus 1070 Ti turbo). It was slower than 1803. Then 1903 came with the inability to open photos, almost 15 seconds to create a new folder and slow as fuck in everything. "Great update". :knock:
Enterprise comes without Microsoft Store. I needed it once for a little utility, but that was it. I don't miss Cortana or other bloatware.
