Don't forget that aliasing can also be desirable. Think about the 12 bit samplers of the 90ies, and their sound, revered in hiphop.

Of course the foldback harmonics made by modern devices are not the same as bit reduced samples, but the sound of those foldbacks is not always something bad that you'd rush to get rid of.

Their sound can be "techy", subtly sweepy like radio, crunchy. All of which might be desirable for some things, except in mastering where nobody wants it so 96k is ubiquitous. Ironically the hi-res processing introduces its own ultra high frequency problems when non-linear processors are used.

just gonna add this to give some context:

there is a huge difference in how we precive sound.
How a sound "sounds" that we describe in one way
How a sound "feels" that we describe differently.

if you are chacing a "sound" you are doing it "wrong" since, really that is not what you want. You want to make the sound "feel" a certain way.

^ THIS. I loved my Emax's and whatnot just for this and still used them until recently for that. Their interpolation was different as well in a way that say Kontakt couldn't achieve.

Listen to "Terrible Lie" by nine inch nails on their first album "Pretty Hate Machine", as some of those drums are a great example how it was used in other genres then hip hop as well....:
