MCA (The Menacing Craking Alliance) was a cracking group started out on the C-64 in 1986. They later switched to the Atari ST and became one of the biggest cracking-groups on the system. In 1987 The Magician and Crush joined the band. During the 1990's they even made the step to the Super Nintendo. One of their main crackers was The Magician who passed away in 2004.

I started producing music with an atari and an MCA K' of Cubase in the 90s, i wonder what happened to this group, if anyone is still Cracking the code..? Anyone?

Is It safe to say that the crack group team thang(for software) originated with the Commodore 64? C64 thats where it all began? Or was there some action before on another system?

 

I don't think so but not that long before(if we strictly talk about software Hacking) as the first know attacked software case was during the early 1980s. A group called the “414s” was one of the earliest hacker groups to ever get raided by the FBI and they get charged with 60 computer intrusions. Usenets began to pop up around the nation at this time and hackers exchanged thoughts using their UNIX based machines. Commodores used an operating system called Commodore Basic (Basic was the programing language) Unix was a different operating system (using C+ language, wich was i think quiet close to Basic). the first "hacking" was actualy a phone Scam.

Somebody at school would have a list of phone numbers for BBS where you would apply and the guy running it would call you back on the phone to check if you where a cop.(not really that fool proof). It was game heaven for the c64. And i remember a phone program that would generate the same tones that payphones made when you inserted money.(the very versatile Sid Chip)Then you would record on a portable cassette and take those tones to a payphone - play them in the receiver and get free calls.(never worked for me) Phone Freaking, I think it was called.

 

There's a thing going on with Mitnick these days, that been copying stuff from others researchers like Marcus Mengs (P4wnP1), MG (OMG Cable), Luca B (WHID Injector), researchers that developed rad sic free tools (well tools you can build yourself DIY, for no more than 10 dollars, Raspberry costs) while them charge overpriced and act like they did it in the first place....

But yeah, the story, phreaking, hacking (cDc) and stuff it's all in my head just like when i was 14 in the 90s. Dial up modems DID really build character back then....

Not seen that logo in a long while, did all my early stuff on the ST and Cubase, funnily enough with that very loading screen.

 

It was fun copying cartridge games to tape on the old Commodore VIC 20 (C64 predecessor). I used to circumvent some x86 games too. Then on to the Amiga.

I've often had the exact same thought. I booted up the same cracked floppy cubase disk on the ST for about 15 year and it has to this day been the most import piece of software I've ever used.
I bought Studio One after finding out some of the original Cubase coders designed it to try and send some karma cash their way.

How did you know about the magician passing away? That was not exactly well-known. UFO passed away about two years ago as well.
