    How Intel Plans to Kill Zen 3

    Jan 06, 2020
    For those not following CES 2020, AMD has begun the unveiling of their technology roadmap
    so far proving that Ryzen was not just a blip on the radar. By November we should see much improvement to the final AM4 desktop CPU lineup.

    Will they improve the Ryzen 4000 mobile series further? Ryzen 9 U & H series?
    Thunderbolt as standard? USB 4.0 with Thunderbolt 3 type speed?

    costs about twice as 3800X (8c/16t) so there is no real better price/performance ratio, especially not for audio;
    software developers have started migrating onto ARM platform, won't take long and Intel/AMD x86 architecture becomes a history

    Single core performance is still a very important criterion for choosing a CPU for audio.
    I wish there were more plugins supporting a high number of CPU cores but as long as the situation doesn't change, CPUs with many cores are certainly great for building servers with many virtual machines but not always for doing audio work (although it will certainly help when using many DAW tracks with virtual instruments).

    Not only that, but most dont know how to distribute plugin load over several cores with bussing, grouping and other routing hence they choke their 16 core faster than someone with a fast quad core that knows what he is doing.

    Seems people are blindly following the amount of cores competition. but for us musicians most important still is the single core performance

    Biased chart.
    In the cpu benchmark list first seven out of top ten are intel cpus and its the chart that is the most realistic for daw users.

    Could you develop this? I'm planning to buy a new computer next year. May be it's not the right time? Is it better to wait?

    Apple has been using ARM-based cpus in iPad lineup, and next laptops are most likely ARM-based too;
    Microsoft has been testing Microsoft for ARM, and they just launched new Surface Pro X featuring their own branded ARM cpu
    https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/surface-pro-x-arm-app-compatibility

    Oly if you're planning to buy new PC next year, there's a lot to consider, I wouldn't call that a bad time though, price of hardware are continuously dropping, so if you aim for desktop setup, you can comfortably go for whatever is available now (and will be cheaper next year)

    I hope to get a 3950x tomorrow, before they are out of stock.

    Btw, ARM CPU's are only for low battery usage, they will not compete with a workstation CPU at all.
    Microsoft had a Surface that used ARM CPU in first generation of Surfaces. It was dirt cheap but totally useless for other things than Office and surfing the web (well, no Flash and things like that either).

    ARM CPU's will be more common in Pads and light laptops to get longer battery life. They don't work very well with CPU intenstive programs like a DAW.

    Almost like saying "people have started migrating to Mars" bro. The 2019 MS/Qualcom SQ1 custom ARM cpu @ 3ghz powering Surface Pro X has sub par performance and near zero app compatibility.
    Honestly, i can't see how ARM can catch Intel and AMD with their pants down, hell will freeze over lol. All numbers indicate that ARM is on the outside looking in:
    20 billion ARM cpus manufactured each year vs ~450mil x86 cpus (about 90-95% of them are Intel) and yet there is no dt comp with ARM.
    ARM's chief architect said just a year ago that their 7nm 3ghz Cortex A76 cpu will have the same performance as a Core i5-7300HQ.
    This year's charts show that estimation is more wishful thinking than real world performance, since the Snapdragon 835 has about less than half the performance of a i5 7200U.
    By the time Cubase Pro runs on ARM i'll be retired anyway :rofl:
    Cheers mate

    That is so absolutely not true. :) ... For GAMERS single core performance is key.
    I mean Threadripper kicks ass for DAWs.
    Seriously, are there *ANY* professional DAW that can't handle multicore systems? I doubt it.

    ah, so Reaper running flawlessly on Raspberry Pi 4 is not a DAW or what?

    I can see Snapdragon being on par with Core i5...
