The only time that I had used distortion on drums throughout a whole track was when I would send the room mic out into a 76 type compressor with all buttons in for the kill and then blended back in to the buss to taste.

You could try Arouser by Empirical labs, quite nice when you want to inject some saturation or distortion into your drum-buss.

Decapitator is unique because of the crisp edge it gives even with minimal push. Nowadays I rarely turn the input drive above 1 and it cuts through the mix, love that on vocals at the beginning of the chain. I've been really getting into vertigo vsm3 for similar sheen at the end of chains as well. decap could possibly use an oversample button for hardcore decaptation mode though

I messed around with U-He Presswork the other day. Pretty amazing analog-sounding results. Very smooth, warm sound. It sounds a little better than EL Arouser to me, but that is also a great compressor with very low CPU usage for what it does. The distortion and lo fi effects in RC-20 also shouldn't be overlooked.

  12. If you want that crispy burnt out sound you can't beat real analog.

So true, I'm discovering now with an old hi fi graphic stereo eq that really warms things up surprisingly

I've tried quite a few but i always end up going back to Ohmicide. I always thought, If it was good enough for Liam (Prodigy) it's good enough for me!

I have actually had my eye on Phil's Cascade (apparently modeled after Phillips gear). Do you find it quick to your workflow or do you need to tweak alot?

Trash is a good one. I have used it in parallel to jack up a chorus in a Rock context .

I generally keep it in a subtle parallel for grimey tracks . And chorus automation for rock bands. I'm gonna blow up a room mic with a 76 soon. Thanks for the tip:wink:
