Has anyone ever tried to build impulse responses from a record player?

We have the 'clean' source on CD
We have a copy on vinyl
Why shouldn't we able to calculate an IR from specific transient-rich samples?

I would have tried myself if I still had my record player

But I think this is easier and more versatile to achieve with emulation plugins.

 

There is a great M4L devices builder who had the nice idea to create awesome cassette noise and IR ,electromagnetic filed recoding and the worlds most detailed vinyl record noise libraries I know.

Not that I'm aware of.

I just roll-off some high-end and layer vinyl crackle/tape noise/hum instead. It's easier and faster.
My bacon-, and hiss collection has gotten quite large over time.

Edit: Diego Stocco created "rhythmic convolutions" which has rhythms in them, which can be used creatively within the music.

Thanks, just before you wrote that I've found four IRs or samples from vinyl that could be used as such.

Holy cow! Even with all my IRs together (metal cabs, celestion mesa cabs, diezel, soldano metal cabs, one marshall for pussies) don't make half a Giga!!

That's right.
In fact, Nebula's secret is the so-called non-linear convolution. Oversimplifying is using IRs for the most important harmonics besides the fundamental (that wuild be eq-matching).
The other one is sampling at different input levels (gain staging) and to be able to interpolate smoothly between them without having a NASA-level computer.
