how do you add attack on a kick drum?
to hit harder
this plugin does it but i was wondering how can i do it manually

an explanation of how to sustain the sound as well manually would help :D

 

What do you mean by "manually"? Transient manipulating plugins are made for that. Like Voxengo Transgainer or this iZotope Alloy. There are a dozen different "transient designers". Of course, if "manually" means what I think it means, you can do it in any wave editor.

you can add more attack on a kick drum by layering a transient like a click of a hihat to give the kick both a heavier attack and a more interesting texture...

I have not used that technqiue at all in my latest album but typically if I wanted harder kicks I would do that along with compression and transient modulation etc...

 

Ha! Thanks for reminding me that I often actually do it with a compressor, although the method of using a compressor for that sounds somewhat counterintuitive, it usually works nicely, depending on the quality of the compressor attack stage. Ones with S-shaped attack stage should work better for the purpose. Bus compressors like The Glue or BussPressor should do the trick.

 

Layering. Add a super-short transient. Highpass, saturate, EQ, etc the transient to taste.

If you do it " manually " . U can play whit " fade out" in the sample " kick " " snare ". But its so hate. Also can play whit a gate plugin.
Or smack from waves do it this very well too

Just like said " moonlight" . U can do it whit compressor. Whit fast release

 

On principle it's a time dependent upward expander. The first few ms (~ 1-5) are raised in level.
As the others already said, lower the sustain phase with a compressor or an envelope and turn it up.

If you want to sustain the sound you have to do the opposite. Squash it with a limiter or use an upward compressor to raise the decay phase.
This can, again, also be done with an envelope.
