Just get ff total bundle thats mostly all thats needed. Other than that all free plugs like YLM, SPAN, Saturation Knob are fantastic

 

Developers are not in touch when it comes to stock plugin 'one fits all styles' features - Maybe with the exception of Steinberg's Cubase 10. The problem with stock vs vendor plugins I find is that they often miss out experimental features/tricks that accommodate for say dance music requirements. Most of stock plugins bode well with everything else that you get in your typical studio. I think as mankind, we gravitate towards visual alternatives that just look better as it psychologically suggests it may benefit or make our music better 'like the pro's' simply because they use or endorse the plugin. but as terms of actual sound - these stock plugins can achieve the same results as flashy graphical vendor plugs 'Most are snake oil' - it just takes a bit more dedication and knowledge.

It's hard to say, due to the nature of 'consumption' .

Additional, I discovered that the best sound producers always use a small amount of effects plugins - they are very strategically and efficiently minded - so they use stock plugins to reduce instability, latency, memory, CPU power and mostly because there use to how that stock plugin works.

As a guitarist i would never dream of having only one amp one cab one delay one dist one od one flanger one phaser and most important one guitar..
As different guitar guitar strings hell even different picks SOUNDS different.
Add to that amp and the cab the speaker all sorts of effects

Its the same with Dawand effects b.t.w i use 3 different Daw and so does alot of ppl aswell.

 

No, and if you think so, you don't have experience with mixing. Different plugs are good for different tasks. For instance, a limiter that works amazingly on the master buss might be too CPU intensive for use on individual tracks that only really need a simple limiter.

I do use only one delay though.

 

I have a folder of "Go to" FX which can change over time and then a folder of the rest of my plugins that I may need for special purposes or a particular sound. I use Cakewalk and have done for years since ditching Pro Tools. The stock plugins on that are excellent in my opinion and I do a lot of my prep work for a mixdown with the Pro Channel on Cakewalk (things like Hi pass and lo pass filters) and that reduces CPU load a great deal. I do a lot of deconstruction and sample replays for clients so I need a wide range of hardware plugin simulations to get a good accurate replay of samples from the 60s/70s and 80s. When I work on my own stuff though I do tend to stick to a core bunch of plugins. I think it's great we have the choice we have now. Take the time to master all your plugins and it's limitless what you can do.

I try to use a base set of plugins and effects per project. I find if you use something different on each song in a project and that gets put together as an album each song sounds like it was recorded in different places if I use a multitude of different plugins. I liken it to a studio where they don't have 20 different reverbs. when I find it a single or bundle of plugins that become my gotos I try to find a way to buy them hence I own all the fab filter stuff and got the rent to own thing from plugin alliance I'm happy with what I have and generally won't try something unless it gets recommended by someone else and they use it and I can hear how they use it. keep it simple.

 

Of course you're right, but even those EQs are far away from one size fits all.

I could probably get by with just FF Pro-Q3 and like a really good 1073 emulation. But just one reverb oh no noooo

And I'm a bit of a compressor whore too. Some just make it really easy to get certain sources to sound good

 

The further you go the less you use. When it comes to effects you are either using it to enhance or to exaggerate. In general people use too many effects, overlay similar effects and assume it sounds good on their system it works. I tend to do as much as I can pre-production to keep any effects added to a minamal, like I said for me its about enhancement or exaggeration. But everything has a sweet spot, which is something people who specialize in mixing and mastering should understand. Nothing should ever be all or nothing or even an arbitrary amount. Every song, project has it's own unique sound and "soul" yes some share the same aspects and so the same effects can be used, but sometimes you're looking for something that unique for the project.

Personally I'm very minimal with my effect plugins. If a project calls for something that I dont have installed I go through what I have, or whats out there and get it and get it done. Sometimes it sucks because I'll buy a $50 plug in I will only use on 1 project ever. But without that one specific style of that effect is what's needed to make the song what it needs to be.

But It's all artistic taste in the end. You can techniqually just use the same stuff with everything and just sweet spot everyone the best you can. Some do this to tie the sound of an album together while other's use multiple producers and styles so the songs on an album are all over the place so. You can, depending on your artistic taste it's not advisable. But people do as they wish so in the end you'll do whatever.

So yeah people over use them, they should be used in a minimal capacity in general, and while tweeking should allow for most to be achieved sometimes the way a plugin is made produces the exact thing needed for said project. Even on the radio I hear over use of chorus, reverb and other things especially on vocals usually covering up that the singer isn't as good as they want so they're over doing trying to reshape the voice.

But in general when you are a composer/producer you gotta also think like a musician. Each musician sets up their gear to sound the best using completely different things than the others. So each instrument should be worked on first and then only slighting fixed up in the end.

But I'mma stop here cuz this is like a 10 hour talk alone and what full sail would charge a year of classes for in just this debate lol.
