    Hi @all,
I have to resurrect this thread because it seems like I've finally found one that is very close to my vision of a fast, simple, usable audio player.
Last time I've tried "Colibri" for Mac, I was quite disappointed because I could not even fast-forward or rewind but it seems that in the meantime, a lot has happened! Kudos to the friendly developer. It may still be a bit buggy but nonetheless I consider it the most usable tiny audio player for Mac.
For the price of a cup of coffee, you get a player that can handle:
    - Lossless playback: FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, APE, TTA, DSD, WavPack
    - Lossy formats: Ogg Vorbis, MP1/MP2/MP3 and AAC/M4A
    - Network streams/online radio
    - MOD and MIDI files: You can even import your own GM sound font
    - Cue sheet support
    - Gapless playback
    - Has keyboard shortcuts for FFWD, Rewind, Previous song, Next song, Pause/Resume

The main feature I like is that it's fast enough to quickly preview hundreds of files without crashing, something that by now only the free "billy" under Windows could do.

    Have fun!

VOX it is, BUT, if you actually use the controls and not just press play and stop only in a calmed way you will be having problems with clicking the wrong areas of the gui.

its a damn shame they dont work on marginals for the different areas, its so minimalistic its hard to use right when done fast.

other than that a great slicked looking player, just like Winamp but for Mac

VOX was one of the first players I've tried and if it was remotely close to the great Winamp experience on Windows then I would have stopped looking further. Maybe you have an old, slimmer and faster version?

    hi fiction, slimmer and faster?
man I cant think of a smaller and faster thing!

weird, how slow (unstable) is it on your system?

You're right, last time I tried it was on 10.9, now the latest version on 10.11 runs much better, although still too buggy for previeving short samples. Playback hangs all the time when fast-forwarding through many short samples. Colibri just works.
For listening to full songs like most users will do, Vox is certainly great!

ahh ok, understand what you want. yeah for small samples I can imagine you need fast reaction.
have you tested to deactivate the fade feature in settings?

btw, its a bit pricey and i haven't tested it but maybe it could be something for you the Iced Audio Audiofinder app? (dont know if its "released")

I ended up with AIMP4, running inside crossover, and recently setup Synology NAS so I use its inbuilt Audio Station web GUI

The problem is that while "scrolling" through hundreds of samples, Vox often stops playback "just like that" - and I have to hit play again. Seems like no biggie, but it's annoying when I have to find one out of 100 samples...
Audiofinder is really great (and one of the few that also plays RX2), I know, and I'm not short of great players, the only app that I was missing was a reliable, small, fast player that has keyboard control, plays many formats without gaps between samples and supports drag and drop without hassles. Although not perfect, Colibri is the best I've found yet.

I use CDM tuner (http://tuner.cdm.sk). Currently it doesn't support flac, but it's a simple and compact stream/audio player.

I will introduce first version of QXPlayer. Sorry but this first version based on custom audio engine. No play lists (but I will do it in the next version) also in my plan remote control on smartphone via wifi and a lot of other as Spotify. Tested on A class amplifier Yamaha and Hegel and headphones HD850 and acoustic KEF R700. Working with usb external DAC and can play native DSD via DoP (but can convert in PCM also if you audio device don't support DSD).
You can play from USB device as external drive and this file based player. No import/export/ copy. Find you file or folder as in Finder and play this file or folder.

A little update on the subject:
    • I'm still using Colibri for playing folders quickly and unintrusively
    • mplayer OSX is a command line player but it's the fastest of all, plays folders, supports many formats and plays audio and video. Combined with the "Open Terminal here" shortcut in Finder that works quite well.
    • AudioEase Red Snapper has a very interesting concept in that it docks to your finder as a resizable window and will play whatever audio file you have selected in Finder. Works well for browsing through lists of files and even supports ReCycle loop playback.
Playing audio files on the Mac still feels a bit like desert island compared to the endless choice of Windows audio players :dunno:

Audirvana in addition to having the best audio quality of the market can read , edit any file at any frequency even DSD / DSF/ ISO / SACD / etc...

besides you can add up to 4 plugins simultaneously like compressor / EQ / audio analysis tools...

I am too searching for a simple/fast and transparent (Bit Perfect) audio player for OSX for ages.. The "New" Itunes (Apple Music) on Catalina have the same problem as Itunes.. Not reading all formats and still being cluncky for multiples fast files.. I guess Colibri is the best option for now.. I tried Audirvana and all the other but its the same as Itunes.. On windows there is a lot more choice for sure..

well, it's not that much actually, let's say average song is 5 minutes, listening one hour a day (which is nothing) takes less than 12 years
