Watercolors can take years to get a solid foundation with unless one has a natural affinity in working with them. Not too many painters that I know jump around from oil or acrylic to watercolor or gouache. Watercolorists have their own club.

the rabbit ( or hare) is Albrecht Drurer one of the greatest draughtsmen of his time.
i don't know who did the cat, but it's quite nicely done. just a few thoughts...
when i started painting i used oils. you can keep oil wet for a long time allowing further painting and manipilation. however, it is a bit messy ( for me it is anyway) if you use linseed oil and solvent for cleaning and thinning etc. it can smell a little overpowering ( unless you have a nice space to painting - i've wanted a studio for years but i am still in my cramped flat). then i tried acrylics. they dry really fast but they are quite vibrant generally and nice to layer . they are essentially water based plastic so cleaning is not so bad unless you leave brushes they will go hard and unusable. but, very bright compared to oil.
i love drawing with pencil and in recent times, inks. i am still on that road today. i also use watercolors , pencils and paints. it's a very beautiful medium. most recently i have been getting into gouache which again is waterbased very similar to watercolours only more opaque. i find that stuff excellent for corrections... it's all great stuff.
i would advise anyone who is genuinely interested in art to make drawing a regular part of your day. draw from life, draw your hands... copy old masters. you may find it very unsatisfying at first but believe me you will progress a l;ong way if you just do some reguarly. drawing is the gateway imho : )

Tiny tips for you @A Ghost On The Moon :

Re. watercolors, a lot of it is down to your choice of paper. Cold pressed versus hot pressed and the amount of "tooth" on the paper surface. I won't tell you which is the right one. It would spoil the fun of discovery that you're having right now.

And clean water. That's important. Keep your water crystal clear and try to avoid using tapwater. De-ionized water is better for watercolor. Tapwater reacts with the pigments and over time it messes up your colorways on the paper.

Back in the day, I painted with oils, inks, acrylic, watercolor, airbrush, Japanese brushes and watercolor pencils. Try loading two pigments onto a single, long-ish haired brush, preferably sable - better still, wolf hair. The result will knock your socks off.

Nowadays, I hardly ever touch wet media. No hours lost for cleaning up your tools in Photoshop.

Most of all...... if you're not working to a reference, allow the painting paint itself. Don't force it. You're just there to hold the brush. Totally lose your ego in the moment and your best work will emerge as if by magic.

One other thing. I mentioned "reference". Catch this explanation of the meaning behind Japanese Torii (gateways). The top edge may be thought of as describing a gentle curve that tilts upwards at each of the two outermost ends. Like a single-stroke drawn freehand.

Unless, of course, were's talking Cubism here. Don't get me started on that bollox. We'll be here all day! :winker:
