    Hey everyone,
I'm currently putting together a new build. I'm coming from intel and trying out AMD for the next build. What are some solid motherboard options that support Ryzen 3rd gen out of the box? The only one I know of at the moment is MSI b450 tomahawk MAX.

I won't have an AMD processor to use to upgrade the BIOS on boards that don't support 3rd gen out of the box. Thanks in advancespeed test

Anything with the (B450) MAX designation from MSI. Others are still unclear if they require a bios update even after looking at the supported CPU lists from manufacturers.

The coming (hopefully next month), B550 boards will have native Zen 2/Ryzen 3 support.

Supposedly any X570 board should work.

Like quadcore64 already said, every 500 series (e.g. X570) board as well as any MSI board with "MAX" in the name should be fine. There are only a few others, like the MSI A320M-A Pro or MSI A320M-A Pro M2 that will be compatible ootb.
But with a lot of other motherboards you also can update the BIOS without a supported CPU. AMD calls it "USB BIOS Flashback". There's a list on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/bvfo57/list_of_b350_b450_x370_and_x470_motherboards_with/

    No, it needs an update.

First of all, if you shop for a compatible but older motherboard, which is all but the x570, and if you do not have an older cpu, you need a motherboard with what we call the "Bios Flashback" capability as was well indicated previously in another post.
So now, Mobos with x470, x570 should be considered the top chipsets and B450 the budget one. I haven't seen any A320 or B350 board running current gen Ryzen cpus yet, although theoretically they are supported, i will not discuss those mobos anyway since they 're too old concerning their price tags and accompanying features.
X570 is straight forward compatible with Ryzen 3xxx, has pci-e 4 , active cooling on the chipset (except two very expensive watercooled mobos). I have personally built two Ryzen 3700x and a 3600 machines, with x570 Gigabyte Aorus Master and Elite boards and had np whatsoever.
X470 is pcie 3 with passive cooling. Unless you have a use for pci-e gen.4 you are good to go with x470 given you get a good bargain, because atm: The mid and mid low category prices between the new and the older mobos are almost very near and x570 boards at 200 euros are the best buy for a respectable mobo which also has the ability for very fast pci-e 4 nvme storage.
In particular i can recommend both the Asus TUF Gaming x570-Plus and the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite both at about 200eu.
The B450 chipset is almost identical to the x470 except it doesn't support SLI/Crossfire.The MSI B450 Tomahawk Max you mention, at about 100 euros, is probably the best AMD mobo for the budget conscious. It's VRM is sufficient enough to run up to the upcoming 16core (no OC, aftermarket sufficient cooler will be needed). It has some M.2 slot limitations but if you are going for only one NVMe drive you will never know :)
The other nice value B450 boards should be the MSI B450 Pro Carbon and the Gigabyte B450 AORUS Pro WiFi, either mobo costs about 130eu.
    Cheers :D
PS: A top workstation mobo is the AsRock Creator and if you 've missed it somehow, it's a mobo with 2 x 40gbps Thunderbolt 3 ports on USB-C, 10gbit Lan + 1gbit Lan, 3 Nvme, 8 Sata III. At about 500 euros though, the features' set starts feeling kinda salty lol.
