I need to need a second PC to load Presonus Studio 4 Pro plus some VST's, I looking on Craig list in my city and I see a lot of powerful gaming PC's for sale, good idea or no? Of course I need to do some upgrading, like more memories, adding SSD drive.

What I will say is this. If you don't need it soon, wait until Xmas has passed. By then most of the new AMD, Intel & NVidia products should be released which should in turn lower the cost of used parts.

Intel will also have better pricing option for new i3,i5, i7 & i9 with more cores & threads.
AMD may have some new CPUs as well which should help lower prices overall.

In general you want a minimum of 4 core with 8 threads (AMD or Intel) with a base clock of 3.4GHz or above (not boost, base).

Building a system for one of my daughters based around B450, Ryzen 5 3400G, 16GB. With an SSD or NVMe, this would be a great budget production rig. The 3400G is a hidden gem that performs very well in tests. Looking forward to pushing it before handing off.

Built the very same rig for my kids two weeks ago and very happy so far:
For less than $700 you can't beat this one, price/performance wise.

    Great!

Until recently, I have been mainly using Intel based systems. AMD has come a long way in the tech & respect arenas.

Just wanted a way to get two good years out of an affordable system while the new PCIe Gen4/5, USB4/5 & such get sorted out.

Was thinking of a newer Xeon system for production but may just go Ryzen 7/9. Threadripper for sure if a more compatible motherboard is developed.

It depends on the system. You can build a gaming riq with a quite slow CPU and a good graphic card (GPU). But for music production it is the opposite. You do not need a good graphics card but the CPU is important.

Link a system or tell the Specs (components) of a system you are interested in and people can tell you if it is worth your money for music production.

From what i have seen a gameing pc has a much better graphic card
that won't be used fully if your making music on it,
just look for a pc with good cpu ,ram and hd, ssd size that you need.
if you do find a cheap gaminging pc you can alway try sell the graphic card to buy more ram or a bigger ssd.
A good cpu would be my number 1 as ram and ssd can be added on over time and get cheaper as well.

Just posted to links in this thread. I think one of them is good, like I said I will do some upgrades, and selling the video card is an option like you suggested, thank you.

I am removing the video card, don't need it, I have built in DVI and that is enough for me. I am definitely upgrading to 32 GB RAM. Will take pictures of the inside and post here. Still don't know how to post photos on this site?
