They can sound real. In 20 minutes I was able to achieve a specific drum sound that I couldn't get with any sample library (and I've tried, like, all of them).

Forget the demos and stock presets, disable all the effects, and work on each piece individually. It's not perfect and there's still much to be added, but it definitely brings something new.

The real beauty of this thing is that you don't have to use eq and compression to enhance your drum sounds, if you lack attack you can add more stick attack, if you lack high end you can play with the different parts of the drum to give you more high end, if you need it to sound deeper you adjust the size etc, to me it sounds much more natural than trying to shape a sample library to a certain sound.

A very interesting point of view.
TBH I was mainly focused on the disk size and the sound out of the box but didn't care to tinker with it like you did, well done.

This what seems most interesting in this concept. I hope that they will optimize it progressively.

not sure what language this is supposed to be.

I have yet to review Modo Drum, but I can at least clear THIS conundrum up for you. It's the secret way of getting out of London's One Way System!

A non-starter if you use an Electronic kit, on my opinion. There’s no MIDI learn so you’re stuck with GM mapping - cymbal choke handling is non-standard and out of all the user comments I could find on the IK forums, no-one could figure out how to trigger hi-hat edge hits. Weird implementation, some of which you can get round if you put the time in with a remapping VST, but why? Also, for all the hype about infinite velocity levels, I couldn’t coax any convincing ghost notes out of hi-hats & snares, even on minimum velocity. Echo a lot of other comments about how far this is behind even a budget EZX setup, let alone a flagship product like SD3 (yes, I’m a Toontrack fan).

Looks like BORG. Be careful with that or prepare to be assimilated.

That's obviously universe 245's Japanese, created after Japan had warred with the Persians for 1000 years.

Also, bear in mind that EZDrummer, SD and Addictive Drums (not to mention BFD, Slate's drums and most Kontakt libraries) use real recorded room samples, sampled mic bleed, etc., whereas MODO Drums uses convolution reverb, which makes no sense -- you might as well turn it off and just insert Altiverb or any other high-end convolution or algorithm reverb after the plug and get something more realistic-sounding. I think that's part of what makes most of these drum VIs and libraries sound as real as they do: having the room they were recorded in and the option to include what the close mics were picking up from the rest of the kit be a part of the overall sound.

It's interesting that they sampled the hats and cymbals rather than try to model them, as that's been a synthesized drum staple since the 808 came out. The percussion was synthetic and the brass was always sampled. The more things change ...

I'm disappointed to hear that it wound up sucking, but honestly, the only reason to get this was always the idea that you could have a bunch of great-sounding drum kits that took up no hard drive space. Instead, this takes up as much room as my entire EZDrummer 1 collection and doesn't sound as good. At least there's MODO Bass (and maybe MODO Guitar, if they were smart ...).

    Forget about it, Iggy.

If they can't model a drum kit convincingly, they don't stand a chance modeling a guitar, which is an incredibly more complex instrument in terms of physics.

Even in the sampling world, how many good drums virtual instruments are there? Dozens. Guitars? None.

Yes, it's way too complex to model a guitar. Perhaps in a bunch of years. I'm sure they're working on it.

    Resistance is futile!!!

It resembles a license plate off that shiny thing they downed over Roswell in '47. :guru:

Anyway I DL'd Modo Drum, so as to tinker a bit, soon as I get time. With Addictive 2 and Toondrums 2 and 3 already to hand it doesn't seem like I "need" Modo Drum in any way, but if Modo Bass sets a measure for expectation then certainly I want to call its bluff.
    Just curious. :hahaha:

I dunno - they more or less nailed the bass guitar. Sadly, though, I agree with the guitar VI statement, though. A few come close, but I've never used one that was 100 percent (or even 70 percent) perfect for everything (rhythm, leads, strumming, picking, etc.). Still, like the bass, an electric guitar is mainly component and electronics modeling, which IK seems to have down, as opposed to trying to model acoustic instruments, like an acoustic piano or drums. No one's been able to physically model or synthesize cymbals and hats in forty or so years and they apparently still can't.

Can anybody get the gui to re-size??? When using the mixer, things are a bit hard to see...

BTW, I've tried the little arrow thing in the right-bottom corner & nothing happens...
