250 gb is more than enough honestly, it's a trap for people to think they need a lot of plugins to produce. A lot of times people end up too focused on wanting to get the next essential plugin and in the process they don't spend any time actually producing music.

Not really, we all know a couple of VSTs that will eat up your 250 GB for breakfast.

Hey, I quit smoking 10y ago (2-3 packs/day), don't drink, don't do drugs.. but don't make me go on 250GB... cooold turkey ..just the thought of it makes me shake.. :wow::crazy:

Seriously.. a synth/rompl (eg omni) + an orchestra + (not many) sample packs/instr libs, which is pretty basic setup for production (even pop/edm/..), in fact don't fit on 250. Could get away w/ that if you only produce with synths and some smaller instrument libs/samples/packs.

Have you already tried some free stuff? I am a big enthusiast: nowadays you can make an entire song with free vsts and vstis.

Synths: Tyrell, Synth1, Obdx, Noisemaker, Sql8, Pg8x, Arminator, Helm, dexed
Drums: drumatic for synthetized, Mdrummer small and loads of free samples for other stuff. There"s even a free version from a drum vst from slate, if i am not wrong.
Daw: cakewalk bandlab, or Tracktion latest free version.
Fx: loads of good stuff out there (delay, reverbs, chorus, amp sims, etc etc etc). Start with Tal stuff, bluecats free stuff and the meldafree bundle. More than enough to keep you busy.
Amp sim? Ignite amps, Lepou amps (hybrid my favorite), Ace from shattered glass (I am not into hi gain stuff: prefer crunch and fuzzy) an loads of free impulses.

Then see what you miss, and start your search.

Ok, I am no professional in this field, but I am pretty satisfied with what we have for really free, and also with the results when I go for free stuff in my compositions.

We should have a "totally high quality best of the best free stuff thread" on this place (there's a thread on free stuff already, but they ended up posting everything that was being released, so not really a best of the best list).

If you plan on writing orchestral music, 250 GB will be gone with one full orchestral suite. My Vienna Special Edition complete library is 550 GB and that is just a starter edition library that contains a full orchestra. Eastwest composer cloud is 800 GB (another complete orchestral package available at a very affordable price, see the next paragraph).

If you are looking to get into orchestral writing, Cuckos Reaper ($60 one time, free updates for life) and EastWest composer cloud ($30 monthly) is the way to go as far as getting started. We are all still waiting on BBC Orchestra from Spitfire to see if that will be any good, and that is going to be $750 and go to $1000 eventually. BBC Orchestra comes out on the 25th of October so keep your eyes peeled for that to see what people think.

Outside of orchestral, I cant recommend anything as I only write orchestral, except omnisphere from spectrasonics. Its available from the other site and is my go to when I need something that is not purely orchestral.

You DO NOT NEED a fucking TB to have a nice collection of sounds. Zebra2 has great sounds and you can get 100s of presets with probably only using 1 gig. Tone2 is another collection that has great sounds that don't take up much of your storage. To be honest I never download those huge crappy soundsets. 250 gig hard drive is definitely enough storage if you're just starting out.

this debate is kinda nonsensical. some people just need 100mb's of samples and some wherewithal to get it done. hell, i did records back then with that much and they did pretty well. (and we didn't have plugins back then).

If your an edm guy or whatnot, or perhaps just a rock band or solo acoustic artist... you could be just fine with a small hard drive footprint of plugins and whatnot. If you are scoring orchestral, and wanna keep up with the latest and greatest, yeah, you are buying hard drives in 8tb increments.

Different strokes and needs for different folks.

This is for Omnisphere, Keyscape, and Trilian. I rarely use Keyscape or Trilian these days, there are just so many better sounding pianos and bass sounds available these days, those two combined make up for about 105 GB of this folder and Omnisphere is the remaining 85 GB or so.

As I said, if you are doing orchestral music or soundtrack work, you will need hard drive space, and you can pretty much forget about getting enough SSD's to have them all stored on, unless you want to spend about $300 for 1 SSD that has 1 TB of storage. I store mine on a 10 TB Western Digital Red drive that is mirrored in a RAID configuration with another 10 TB Western Digital Red drive. My Vienna and East West libraries are stored on an older 2 TB drive because they do not use Kontakt, and if the 2 TB drive fails, they are easily redownloaded, thanks to the convenient manager that EastWest and Vienna provides.

I also make extensive use of Sample Logic atmospheric libraries, not shown here, that folder is 125 GB, Gothic Instruments Dronar atmospheric libraries sits at about 70 GB for the entire Dronar suite, and in this same category, Native Instruments Thrill (which is included in the screenshot above but just for reference, it is about 30 GB). While these libraries are not used for creating music, they are used for creating ambiance and atmospheres, they need hard drive space.

Then we have some of the one off libraries, where the individual folders are not impressively big, but when combined, does eat up space. Fluffy Audio Dominus choir, a library I use extensively, sits in 28 GB. Cinematic Studio Strings sits in 21 GB while Cinematic Studio Brass sits in 34 GB. My Heavyocity libraries sit at just over 82 GB, and Ethera (a vocal library) is around 53 GB, and I didnt even look at lightning force, a giant percussion library.

For other genres of music, sure, you can get away with far less, although, on occasion, I find myself needing to make a "sound-alike" track, that is, a song that sounds like a mainstream song but isnt, and for that, I usually use Band in a Box for a quick mockup and Band in a Box as I recall sits at around 200 GB.
