    Reading about this new Catalina Update.

    A statement reads "Catalina looks to be tightening the screws with DAW's, more so Third Party Plugins and security related to them" followed by "Along with removing support for 32-bit code, tightened security measures in Catalina will also force third-party software makers to dig in a little deeper when preparing for Apple’s latest operating system. More specifically, but without getting overly technical, there are integral changes being made to the way software can access certain information and the way permissions and installers work."

    No further detail but this sounds as if they are trying to stamp out Warez perhaps, but if that's the case it'll be inevitable that eventually we all have to update to Catalina someday, as software catches up and all that. I don't like where this is heading. Am i over reacting here?

    That's the first time I pass updating. I see no advantage only downsides.
    Interesting would be if you can disable app notarization.

    From KVR thread:
    "That's actually quite on topic. So from January, anyone who's bought a new Mac or who updates his system will be unable to use software which wasn't signed a certain way with a certain type of security mechanism. The good thing about that is, finally it's gonna be very difficult to use cracked software. The bad thing: I reckon a whole lot of dated software will just fall off the grid. The market on Mac will be "unsaturated" from abandoned stuff overnight."

    "I'm not a developer, but I guess that Windows Smartscreen could be along a similar vein, although it is entirely optional at the moment. Apple have long been rumoured to be wanting their app store to be the only way you can acquire software and I think this could be another step towards that."

  6. Sounds like Apple are going to have to go through a Windows Fista moment.

    if you can afford spending couple 1000 bucks on new Mac, you can afford to buy plugins for few 100 bucks, simple math;
    according to official Apple site, cheesegrater Mac Pros are no longer supported, and 2012 iMacs/MacBookPro/MacMini are oldest compatible devices, so basically you NEED new Mac for new MacOS....
    only cool new feature in Catalina is ability to use iPad as display (and control device) - this feature requires Mac with Thunderbolt 3 though (MacMini 2018, MacBook Pro 2016 and newer etc..)
    aaand if you wanna go hackintosh route, nVidia cards provide acceleration only up to MacOS 10.13.6, and there isn't any noticeable improvement since High Sierra anyway, major stuff like native NVME SSD support is there already

    a PC that's twice as good as the MAC instead.

    And you still can boot up MAC OS in a virtual machine or as second OS.

    I'm the exception to the rule, slightly off topic but i'll shorten how i got my Macbook Pro 2015, Retina, 500gb SSD, i5 3.2g CPU.
    I was a student saved some money, needed it for graphic work. Anyway, I saw post on Craigslist from 4mins ago near my town for it. Called the dude, I was at his place within 30mins. It sounded too good to be true, but I was under no obligation so I had nothing to lose but my life. His house was empty AF, no furniture lol. it was weird. my alarm bells ringing hard, used the mac, no issues. I even ran a serial check and it came back and matched the specs of the sys report. I asked why he's selling it, he said "I need cash in a flash, I'm going overseas tomorrow" I asked for a box or receipt and he said he through it out, so strange because he said he bought it last month... it had 5 battery charge cycles.

    I risked my luck, I was a desperate student. the ad said 700 bucks, he dropped it to 600 when I was hesitating to buy. I took my chances. Spent next 2 weeks figuring out why its so cheap, I took it to the Apple store and they checked and verified its 100% working, zero issues. The only thing they said "It's more than likely stolen, but nobody has reported the serial, or disabled it." 4 years later, it's worked like a charm, but i absolutely could never afford a Mac outright, or plugins. I just got lucky i guess, but I take very very good care of it.

    I know that Steinberg software is incompatible w/ Catalina, so there's another reason not to update? Not that Windoze has been much better: w/ 1903 being driver / sound madness every other update ;___;

    ... hasty generalisations, guess they're pretty cheap at least?

    It's obvious that Apple and Microsoft are moving to a new direction. Security! Internet criminals are pretty smart these days. The big money lies closely within reach.. Crypto hacking is big business. Takeover and confiscate complete systems in a second nowadays is a heavy topic for every software manufacturer.. And let us be honest you dare not think about the consequences that these suckers takeover a nuclear power plants or medical systems. All current operating systems and software build on these systems are vulnerable as hell. I'm convinced that in the near future systems are becoming slower and much less versatile as they were just for security reasons. Fuc.ing world we live in
    unfortunately..:guru:

    Im on one of the now dead 2010 6-core Mac Pros heh. Looks like I switched back over to hardware from Logic just in time heh. Im sure as hell not spending $6k on the low end Mac Pro coming out, and Im not about to drop over $1000 on a fucking Mac mini just so its usable for audio heh. Looks like a cheap PC and Reaper will do just fine for tracking finished stuff from the MPC.

    This is what happened when they gave Apple back the ability to integrate audio and midi into the OS.. It was good for everybody until they decided they wanted to tell you what to do and want Logic Pro to be the only ecosystem you can work with. Just like when they killed Sound Diver and expected everybody to switch to their shitty software synths heh.

    I plan on sticking with my current Mac far into the future anyway. Soon people will be looking for that crunchy vintage Mojave sound and then I will finally have a career:wink:

    let's not forget the variety of Windows-supported devices and Windows versatility by design makes it a troublesome mess in the long run, so saying "twice" as good is questionable at best - the sheer fact it's third-party Steinberg ASIO providing ability to use Windows at all for low-latency audio recording and processing is laughable, and there's tons more problems with Windows like no support for multiple interfaces, no native MIDI over network, device agregation etc.. - all being provided in MacOS for years "for free" within the OS itself
    (I'm not starting Mac/Win war again, just stating some interesting facts related to audio workflows)

    ah sure, this really comes down to personal mindset - for some reason people think they can fix their own incompetence/inability by wasting money on overly expensive gear and plugins - personally I don't have problem using free plugins or trial plugins for fun, I don't consider myself a capable sound engineer either; I have second-hand MacBook Pro 2012 which can totally handle recording whole bands, and I have PC/hackintosh I can dualboot Win10/MacOS whenever I want;

    I'd say the philosophy behind using either Win or Mac for more serious production is, to just set a serious workstation machine up, and let it do the job - not waste time and nerves on upgrades which don't really bring any advantage to actual workflow - Catalina does bring nothing on the table which owners of older Macs could make use of imo;
    upgrading to new MacOS is imo worth it only when jumping to a complete major version, like 10.13.6, 10.14.6, 10.15.6 etc..

    There are a lot, and i mean a LOT of posts like these on every single social media platform. Every single day. Why oh why do people keep buying Macs? I just can't understand it. Buying a Mac is like buying yourself trouble, overpriced to boot. I have Windows 10 and everything works, every DAW works, every game works, every old VST I have ever downloaded works, everything just runs like swiss clockwork.

    People, be smarter consumers!
