    I love that question.

When the sole purpose of typography would be the conveyance of thought rather than style, I would default to Berthold Akzidenz-Grotesk. First published in 1898, Akzidenz-Grotesk might be thought of as the grandfather of Helvetica and so, merely for the sake of using anything but Helvetica, I think going back to the roots of a hot metal typeset that is neutral whilst adequately functional boils down to the question of "Why not?"

Everything changes when the textual message is an element of an overall design concept. Within a signage scenario the lettering style is the more important factor. The choice of typeset, the font variations within the typeset and the "look" of the final composite result of art and typography go hand-in-hand. In such cases, my personal favourite typeset and its font variations would be largely immaterial, especially so when my ultimate intention is to win custom from management teams and/or decision-makers who know fuck all about the linguistics of typography but have lovely deep pockets and a strong feel for what they like and what they don't like.

I could continue for quite a while on this topic, quite possibly at far too great a length for an online forum post, for it is an enormously large and sometimes arcane field of interest that fascinates me. However, I shall not be so bold but, rather, stfu for now.

We use Whitney Condensed BLACK because we’re ultra bold! The whole font family is very versatile.
    Clavo Black by
Michał Jarociński is very appealing too, esp for copy text.

Font choices are all about readability. You can love a font as much as you like but if it ain't readable you've failed. Common sense would tell you that thick, bold fonts look better sized very large like headlines, headings and on T-shirts. Very thin fonts, like the ones loved by the fashion and cosmetics world only work very large too. The idea of having favourite fonts is irrelevant without a context. It depends on what your font choice is going to be used for. Is it for writing text, like letters, articles or book manuscripts? It has to be legible, it has to have all the punctuation marks, good looking numbers etc. I've scrapped a font because the 'h' is taller than the 't' in a word like 'then'. To me it looks artistic yes, but a stupid distraction. And I've ditched fonts because I didn't like the quotation marks. It goes on and on. Favourite font for what purpose?
