    Hello!

So I'm pretty noob to all the production frame of the music making. I do music for myself and I don't need to send any projects to anyone. As a Studio One user, I tend to start a song, put some virtual instruments and bounce them to start mixing that audio.

My question is: Is it very necessary to export all my midi channels as steems and then start another file for a mixing session? I consider it an extra step but I don't know if that would improve my mixing process in any way. Please drop your opinions, I'll be very happy to read all of you.

Sorry if my question is dumb

Your question is a good one but it is subjective. A better question is: Are there any advantages in rendering MiDi to audio? There are several. A lower your CPU comsumption. No glitches. It is also saved in case your outboard MiDi instrument breaks or the plugin or DAW becomes unavailable (for whatever reason) Moreover, any decent mixing or mastering engineer WILL ask you for the stems. So in my case, yes; I would render and/or bounce everything to audio. This include all the FX, too.

I wouldn’t because it doesn’t translate well with the music I make.

Bouncing everything to audio in electronic type music can be impractical because electronic music relies heavily on processing to get the type of sound you want... sometimes rendering to audio makes you lose the realtime processes that you want in your mix...

So, as pirate said it’s subjective and depends...

Tits don't you know when to stop? I agree partially with what you said. There has to be a time when you must say "This is it." Even if it is EDM.
Rendering to audio brings finality to a project and gives you a sense of accomplishment. It signals that it is time to move on to the next one. I mean, we can't be tweaking knobs and riding faders for ever. If it is done right, it is right and it wont need any changes. With that said, we both agree that this is purely subjective...and at the end it all ends up as audio.

yes very true, alot of people like to print to audio as soon as they find the sound and melody and move on. You can always process afterwards anyway. Rendering to audio as you said makes it easier to keep the sound as well since you can put it in any daw and it doesnt rely on a program...

wow, the first thread ever where I just clicked 'like' to every message.
    well done everybody.
    sometimes I render, sometimes I don't.
sometimes we're sure where we're up to, and sometimes we (and clients) aren't.

It has some pros and cons but necessary, no.

I decide this mainly based on CPU usage and loading time.

Just use stock/low-CPU plugs when mixing?
