I did a BTECIII course a couple of years ago, which was my introduction to LPX. The course went well, but I couldnt help noticing the slight incongruousness of having to use pencil and paper to log whatever we did (this is what the tutor was telling us was 'best practice.')

Now - probably like you, I dont feel the need to log every last breath I took, but some kind of app that records the various patches you try out during the course of a writing session, may in some colour-coded format for easy reference, now that would be useful!

So you didn't have to stop composing, and if you found a sound that would work perfectly with another one you'd tried about an hour before, the ability to find that previous sound again quickly, without having to retrace your steps going down lists of patches trying to recall the name.. That would be a Godsend!!!

 

Studio One (my main DAW) tracks everything you do and you can name the versions. You can do a lot of these stuff by powerful version, preset and section manager features of Studio One.

There are scratchpads that you can create from your song and do an alternative arrangement or noodle around on your instrument.

There is the browser that you can drag and drop presets very easily.

Tracking everything you do should be already in your DAW. I am not sure if Logic has it. But in the end, you should decide and organize different ideas.

 

It's funny... But that's the 2nd MAJOR advantage I've heard that Studio 1 has over Logic Pro... I'm starting to get the feeling that people stick with Logic out of a sort of nostalgia. Or dread of having to start learning a DAW inside out from scratch again - a pretty daunting idea! The other great advantage I'd heard was to do with the SMTPE clock. That the Studio 1 clock was spot on, whereas - for whatever reason, Logic's clock tended to drift... I"ve got a (coughs embarrassedly) c'cked version of Studio 1... maybe I should unpack it and see what its like...
