Hey guys so im currently using an hp compaq 6720s laptop for making music(2gigs of ram /1.7ghz Intel Celeron..it has windows vista home basic installed(works pretty good..but still not enough for getting creative without having the cpu going from 0 to 100 real quick),got the laptop back in 2012..not brand new tho got it from someone who wasnt using it anymore..now im saving money to get a budget laptop(because with 2gigs of ram cant use plugins like serum and i need to freeze when the projects gets in depth) somewhere around 500 euros max..i seen many good priced laptops around 400/500 euros the thing is that ALL of them comes with win10..the ram and processor are pretty darn good but im afraid win10 is pretty buggy yet and it wont work good with ableton..any of you experienced any problems with ableton on windows 10? let me know,im not in a hurry since i wont buy the laptop too soon(need to save more money) but some answers now could be helpfull!

the worst part is that win10 starts to feel like an apple OS when you cant decide simple behavior like dont force updates on me, shitload of data collection whether you like it or not, i dont want to be Microsoft's test piggy without any privacy.

You can still buy laptops with windows 7 equipped, amazon??

but dont think it will always be buggy its the newest OS so thats what ableton, cubase etc will test their software on

Been using Ableton 9 on Win 10 for almost a year now... Zero problems or bugs for me.

Couldnt be happier, i wouldnt go back if u paid me.

I'd worry about privacy if i was doing something wrong or hiding something, otherwise, i just couldnt care less.

Performance and ease of use is more important to me and Win 10 is both for me.

I'm using windows 10 for 6 months now on all my machines after evaluating it about three months.
No problems with Ableton/Cubase 8/8.5 and any plugins.
If one decides to switch to W10 I'd suggest a clean install rather then an update.
But on a Celeron System you'll not be happy. Problems you have under W7 will get worse.
    On a i5 System I see no problem running W10 (I've got a Surface 4 Pro i5) and Ableton.

There are some bugs in Windows but as far as I know, no problems related to audio.

One serious bug is introduced with the first major update to W10. The detection of network shares/SMBs is really slow and needs several minutes after a machine is booted. In the meantime the "Network" is empty.
It is especially annoying if you are searching for a network share in file file dialogs that don't allow for unc paths like \\server\c\
Because I place all sound data on a NAS this is a problem I have every day.
As a workaround I'm using hardlinks that connect directly to the share.

"why worry about privacy unless you have something to hide??" - typical sheeple attitude, wake up- privacy is a right, not selectively but de facto

it wasnt meant as an insult im being realistic. you implied that the reason people should worry is if they have something to hide because thats what you do..

im not wasting any effort on privacy at all bro.
wasted effort is downloading and installing win10 when there is almost zero performance benefit over win7. it might start 1.4 seconds faster, is this a fucking joke?

    our priorities are obviously different.

The people that are the most concerned about their privacy are those, who no one is interested in.
The term "privacy" is just another hype. No one did ever have it, nor will ever have it.

I don't know what the fuss is about win 10 collecting data, especially if you're using it for music because it should be offline. Having your music PC online is asking for trouble. I've just switched to Win 10 an it's pretty stable with Ableton. I've only had a couple of 3rd party plugins that wouldnt work, but I've still got a win 7 setup on a spare drive, so it's not a problem. If you're low on resources it'd be better to use Ableton v 8, it's less resource hungry than Abelton v9. Also, a Celeron is not great for music production, and depending on what you call a 'budget' laptop, you might be making too little gains if you go for a 'budget' laptop.

The best thing to do is use a CPU chart like this: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/laptop.html to see what ratings each laptop processor have, then do searches for laptops by processor. I have an i5 quad desktop, which bench scores about 6000, and that handles everything I chuck at it, and if you look at laptop CPUs with similar or better bench scores, then do a search, you'll find some bargain laptops out there.

I've been looking myself recently, I need a mobile set up, and I've found nearly new laptops with good bench scores for around £250 to £350 GBP, which will more than do the job, so have a look around, and make sure you search by processor otherwise you might end up with something that isnt much of an improvement.

Also, I'd never put win 10 on a slow laptop, if you've got a slow laptop stick with win 7.

honestly, with that processor, you should be running something like reaper and xp or 7, that will go farther in production before your computer starts glitching horribly. although, if you can upgrade your hardware or get a better pc for as little as $300, running windows 10 with ableton will work well. sometimes the audio drivers need a rollback on some hp machines, and running in win8 compatibility mode for some plugins are the extent of the very minor issues i've come across.

It will work fine, like any previous windows version.
Besides; windows store, "modern aps", forced updates, sniffing services, tasks.... can be "opted-out"....

Listen to this man, sheeple!. Never settle for less, specially when it comes to your rights.
As for any new audio workstation, I would suggest not to use internet. I have made a experiment with a couple workstations, similar specs between them; and the offline version is running as fast as the first day I configured it, the other has stalled.

If you need connectivity for drivers and stuff, configure an internal network. It runs smoothly and you will not have to deal with the useless overhead of uncalled updates or data collection, not only from Microsoft but from Google too.
