    Have you ever heard the snare sound of Metallica's St. Anger?

    And how will this explain that Nightwish's drum sound on Endless Forms Most Beautiful is worse than on the predecessor Imaginaerum?

    Mid-side overheads (Fathead 2 and Shure KSM137) AKG D-40-snare, Sennheiser E835's on ride toms. Rode NT-2A on floor tom. Senn. E902 on kick drum. KSM137 on hi hat. Correct placement and mic selection supercedes all other things 1st. The better the placement, the less things you need to do to make it sound good. I like JJP drums in Waves. Simple and effective. A really good drummer who knows how to strike correctly and tunes drums well goes a long way, too. THEN comes the processing (parallel comp., etc.) here is a live mix of my drums. The engineer used mosltly Shure 57's and 58's

    that's different thing;
    basically any non-linear-phase EQ, Dynamics, Saturation etc.. shifts phase unevenly across frequency spectrum, this cannot be compensated at all, but result may sound better if phase offset (time delay) is manually adjusted by ear

    Ah, yes. I figured you meant that. This is how EQ works. It's good to have a DAW that has manual offset parameter per channel, so the problem can be fixed (or adjusted), post EQ.

    Yeah, I'm using fx a lot, lot more on drums nowadays, so all this is rly interesting to me. I even use (most hated) compression :O and like it. Don't tell anyone!

    I was just wondering how you got mono verb back to pannable, placeable stereo / 5.1 I guess you've (already) explained that you don't rly need to worry about it too much! :D
