I agree, but it's just another thing MS stole from Linux. Yet they will make sure all the windows user think it's there invention.
    Because MS know best.

I used to play with viruses in a VM. I just wanted to see what they do, and how to possibly get rid of them manually. I find that fun.

I never managed to infect my main OS through a VM, hosting it in Linux or Windows.

Do I understand the following correct.
(I use the word virus in the following to any kind of harmful things)

    A virus...
... cant be installed on a system which has UAC enabled and run as standard user and not admin. (user don't know admin pw of course:)
... must be installed by a person, e.g. by clicking on something downloaded or received via email
... may install itself when visiting a webpage which self executes it and use a security hole of the visitos computer ?
... may install itself after reading an email? which got a malicious attachment ?
    ...

whats missing, any wrong assumption, please correct ?

Windows defender just got voted best, ahead of Norton, Kaspersky and Malwarebytes.

Kaspersky is definitely the best of the best
I uninstalled Avira and Aast (several years on Avira, one on Avast) because a lot of problems (deleting files, crack file deletion contained in RAR archives during the download, do not always take into account exclusion folders ).
Since I use Kaspersky, all these problems are part of the past, I did not even need to configure it (contrary to hours spent in Avira and Avast settings)

I don't know if they're right, but the last time I tried an AV other than Kaspersky was Avira.
    Best according to several articles/benchmarks.
The GUI was so horrible it almost broke my eyes. When I scanned I discovered it even wasn't multicore, that means slow as f*ck. I didn't even last to make an entire scan. Many people who says Kaspersky is a resource hog don't know it's due to its extreme speed, it makes the most of your CPU/disk and you can configure it to stop when another application or yourself is active.

What I'm sure from what I've read is that Windows 10 Defender is quite good for being free. I tried to configure it to my taste and I couldn't, so I'm still using Kaspersky.

usually Panda Free does what I need,
but I'm on MacOS hacky most of the time, so no AV needed

Some inexperienced users might do mistakes. I don't asked for me, I don't use Windows anymore besides in a VM to play games lol

[EDIT] theses days I use more Windows than my Hackintosh

I assume you were joking, Windows 10 has a pragmatic and fine GUI. Well, IMHO. Once you get rid of CPU hogs like the start menu.

Not only inexperienced. I sometimes want to try some risky software, so backups in order and I take the chance.
Regarding keygens and fixes, the first thing I do is to rar them with password, so no AV can delete them.

It's true that an AV is a resource hog. What I do is not use mine (Kaspersky KIS) but always keep the lightweight Windows firewall. With a complement like Sordum FAB that let's me manage it way easier and in whitelist mode.
Periodically I do a system scan with KIS.
And if I suspect there's malware, for example after I install risky soft, I start KIS with all the artillery (including firewall though I usually kill internet first) and full scan.

Regarding Sandboxie and VMs, they are powerful tools indeed. I'm too lazy to use them but I've the luck my most sensitive files (work) have to be in a Linux server VM anyway, so it works for me.

If I had to program (Windows) desktop applications I'd probably have a different workflow.
