thats indeed wrong when he use DAW faders for gain staging..
but some ppl do it this way...

 

song writing -> sounddesign -> mixing -> mastering.

for now, just concentrate on songwriting and sound design. you clearly have no idea, so just keep practicing and writing. the ar of mixing and mastering will come in about 10 years after a strong understanding of the basics.

 

writing -> sounddesign -> writing ->mixing -> writing -> sounddesign -> sounddesign -> mixing
jump out the window -> ozone

soften out peaks. or..eg i have vox track and a bass track...which want presenter i let untouched the other get gain smothed out on peaks...10.000 times better as using compression on all and everything(i dont say you doing this but many)


gain staging is also soundesign tool for me
soundesign contains mixing and making youre drums knock is also mixing but still this is not in classic intrumental stems mixing phase..

btw offtopic but today there are guys render whole mixes (electronic genres not instrumental -in the box) in midi to 1 master audio track

Just slap an Ozone master assistant on that bad boy and you're gonna be fine

 

"hip hop production nowadays" is a kinda broad selection, "your local semi-famous Hip-hop productions" maybe yes.
the "standard" Young forever, mubz got beats, CashMoneyAp etc. etc. cats produce Instrumentals where it's easy to squeeze in an vocal.
But then still, the 2 track gets inserted in the mixing stage where it gets adjusted an then again at the final mastering stage.
