    Hello all,

Almost everyone still raves about Omnisphere. Bass lovers love Trilian. But nobody talks about Stylus.

Was it good? Is it still relevant and if not, why not?

Would love to hear your opinion.

I played around with it a few years ago. It presents a lot of cool options for working with loops. Ultimately I thought it was slightly clumsy and unwieldy to work with, but I was fairly new to producing. I might have a different opinion if I tried it again.

If the workflow doesn't bother you, then yeah, it's a good plugin. Coincidentally, it's the same reason I mostly use Omni for preset browsing rather than sound design. The layout, modulation targeting, mod depth adjustments, MSEG window, and practically everything else just doesn't really suit the way I like to work. Spectrasonics sure does like to tuck everything away in its own tab lol.

Thanks, that explains a lot, especially since I have never used a Spectrasonics product. I would expect sound quality to be excellent of their old samples/loops are anything to go by.

Stylus and Stylus RMX were ahead of their time 15+ years ago. I remember using RMX a lot.

I don't use it anymore but I believe that its concept is still relevant even after all those years.

It's still a powerful plugin but the problem is that its content might feel slightly dated.

I still find it very usefull - and more than that.

I guess most ppl never actually dug deep enough into this amazing RMX to see all the potentials it offers.

    And that´s a shame.

    Hey phloopy,

Nice of you to indulge me with a response once again. So far, it's been positive enough to encourage me to try it. If you have time, please let me know what features make it useful to you.

Not related to a specific genre but more to the fact that after more than 15 years, many RMX loops have been heard all other the place. It doesn't mean that it sounds bad, far from that: I believe that the sound quality is still top notch and as @phloopy said, it's a plugin that has a great creative potential: Digging into this gold mine takes some time of course.

As I said, the concept back then was very clever and is still relevant today and I wouldn't be too surprised if Spectrasonics were working on a Stylus 3 or something similar.

Not sure whether than means that you can't regroove directly in Stylus RMX or just that people were lazy and kept using out of the box grooves in productions. either way, you people have definitely made me want to try it. I really appreciate your comments.

i agree with a above poster. Stylus was just way to ahead of it's time.

If it wasnt "old" it would fit rite in with todays Drag and drop producers.
Had some pretty neat rhythems percs, Fuggit if ya found it try it out.
Theres tons of oldies I'd love to have now... Hypersonic 2 anyone? lol

Eh, I disagree with the sound quality comments. Unfortunately, the libraries in Stylus are dated with regards to the way they are recorded, missing quite a bit on both the high and low end frequency ranges. Back in the day, this was fine, this was how things sounded, but today, they sound limited in their frequency range. The sounds actually sound the kind of frequency range you might expect off a cassette tape.

That's strange. The old loops still sound great (distorted reality for example) but I haven't heard Stylus.

I think the sounds in stylus quality wise will do just fine.
We we still have some of the OG sound in Omnisphere.. lol them wavetables aren't dead.
some shitty recorded rubber band guitar recorded on a Talkboy (oooh yeah i had one.. OG)
can still be repurposed into the next big hit.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and them things scary as well in DnD
.. but for real Quality is in the creator.

Always make me sad that more people never found out how good Stylus rmx is.

Firstly, you can convert RX2 files to use in Stylus, theres still loads of sample libs that do RX2 along with Wav or kontakt.
This gives an almost endless supply of content for Stylus.

Secondly, make sure you try the chaos designer, you can warp, change and do almost anything to a RMX loop that you could ever want, Its great fun.
And when you get a funky loop, you can save the midi for later.

    Ah, MIDI Save too. Perfect.

I don't have any RX2. I was a bit stupid and got rid of everything that wasn't Kontakt or straight wav for lacks of space (I had loads of space but filled it all). I guess I need to think about rebuilding a rex collection.

It's absolutely fantastic getting all that feedback. Good and bad. It really helps building up a picture of whether something's right for me. I really appreciate you all taking the time to respond. Thanks a lot.

Hello. StylusRMX is probably the funnest plug in that I have ever downloaded. If you can get a decent library for it, it is endless fun. Admittedly some of the stock sounds are slightly lower quality, but a few expansions solves that. I would be thrilled to hear that Eric is working on the successor to Stylus.
Even though it can go pretty deep it is simple enough that people with no music making experience whatsoever can very quickly get the hang of it with very little explanation.
Definitely try it out. Also, HERE HERE to bringing back the Hypersonic 2 as was mentioned above.
See you guys! And remember I love you all... All of you.
