What's your idea about guitar synth pedals, effects? Does it make sense when there are midi guitars/pickups? They seem limited to me compared to what can be done with midi

How do you make these kinds of songs using vst?

As a guitarist, (Metal Head here) The Boss SY-1 could be fun to play around with. But, $200-$300 is way to much, just for fun. However, If I were a lot more experimental with my sound. I could see the benefit of owning it.

I prefer Audio2MIDI. Then I can use any snyth I want. I can also layer several snyths.
    Edit: JamOrigin MIDI Guitar 2

I have had a GR55 and a GP10 for a few years, but they have not been touched for at least the last two years. The sounds that they produce are great for live gigs and probably would be good for studio stuff as well, especially the guitars and basses. The proprietary lead requirement is what killed my usage (I went wireless on stage). This new pedal has me interested, even though it is predominantly 'synthy' sounds. I would look into the SY300 as well, which has a lot more power than the new SY1. I guess that it all depends on what you want to use it for. I am thinking of picking up an SY300 to use for my acoustic sets, but only tastefully, with the output very low in the mix to create a 'hidden' ambience.

Those synth pedal are generally quiet limited, and depend a lot of the input, so you often need to combine them with a compressor.
I'd prefere a midi system if it was easy to bring to stage and 100 stable.
As it's been said with midi you can use any synth, create your own complex sounds.

Well, I've got an old and beaten up Boss SYB-3, which is wicked fun as a toy. Works as an autofilter, synth and octaver.

It tracks decently even on a guitar (though lower octaves only, obviously) and you can press and hold down the pedal and it keeps on droning the current note so one can noodle on top. I don't really use it that much and when I do it's for creating truly weird noises, you know, as a toy.

You could use the "Harmonic Synthesizer" component in Guitar Rig, which is a decent clone of EHX's Micro Synth for these kind of sounds.

I also use Jam Origin's MIDI Guitar 2 which tracks decently with polyphony on a monophonic (read: normal guitar) input, I usually run it to Kontakt for better styled stringed instruments.

Yeah, it's pain in the ass and then those cables/connectors are really fragile and then you basically assign a single instrument for synth usage, sold my old GR-20 for this reason, really.

To me, "Audio2MIDI" is just a collective term for converting "audio to MIDI". I've used these software/apps since early 2000, from AmazingMIDI to AKoff Music Composer (long before Celemony Melodyne).
Now I use Jam Origin MIDI Guitar 2 to convert my guitar audio to MIDI signal (in realtime).

jam Origin for sure, it works great. I used it to to trigger samples. I recorded pinch harmonics, I could then trigger them with any note on the fretboard I chose. The possibilities are endless, it can be quite the learning curve for a guitarist without electronic music or Midi experience, it is worth the effort. I learned alot about Kontakt when i was setting it up to work with Jam Origin. Whoever I showed it to went Bat shit with the possibilities of how it could be used.

I agree with all of the things people are saying.

I like Jam Origin, and because of that, I believe these pedals don't worth it. Especially if you listen to the synth sounds, they are not that clean. They are quite expressive, but their sound quality reminds me of X-File era synth sounds.
I prefer a clean digital synth or Kontakt samples over that.

Jam Origin handles pitch changing like vibrato or bends quite well, however, incorporating the vibrato to samples is not straight forward. I think some Kontakt libraries disable pitch wheel, and so you can't express vibrato with those.

However, for adding expressivity to my playing (like bowing of strings, or breath of brass), I always think about making a DIY breath controller (cause of the shelf ones are so expensive). I can't use the expression pedal that good when I am focusing on playing. But I think a breath controller is easier than an expression pedal.
