Who do you give credit to more as a producer, those who sample or those who get it from their head?
i concede it's that the end product matters, but of course we we all have our opinions

 

Hip Hop was born from breaks and (1 sec) samples.
Producing from scratch takes skill but so does sampling.
You have to hear an ear for it.

The main thing that is missing from sampling is theory (chords,progressions,melodies etc)
Both are dope.And me being a sample based producer i would like to compose more from scratch and i can it's just that anyone who knows anything about theory will pick it apart. No matter how it sounds.So i just stick to what i know and make dope s^%t.

 

they dont have a musical undestanding of the basis of music thats why their shit sounds lame when you quit them their samples i make awesome music with reason 5 from scratch and also make sampled music sinceresly they just lack synthesis and composition understanding and i dont know how you even wondered this but yeah you can be a novice or not into samples my advice is to learn how to make music

 

the thing about the ear is so true. i can't manipulate samples at all it's tedious

who cares about music theory though.. maybe sample based producers worry that their shit don't sound like the samples
if it sounds good it sounds good no?

no dude i'm talking about dudes that really know how to manipulate samples. not basic looping

 

The scenario that you suggested is interesting yet it is unfair not only to the sample based producer but also to those producers that do not sample. It is like taking a fish out of the water or having a marathon runner sprint in the 100 meters race. I give credit to both. Sampling is an art form. As much as some people criticize it, sampling takes more than having a sampler and a crate full of records.

 

I agree. The end result is all that matters but it seems like EVERYBODY is producing now and want to critique and not just listen. It's hard for cats to take off the "producer" hat and put on the "fan" hat.I started off as an emcee,b-boy,graff writer so i appreciate the culture more than anything.A lot of cats are making more beats from scratch because of sample clearance lawsuits but fuck it,it is what it is.

And the key to the "art to sampling" is actually kind of simple.....My boy told me years and years ago......."chop small".It seems tedious but once you REALLY REALLY understand how to manipulate the sample...it's ALL LOVE.

 

Everyone is good with the skill they want to work on. A singer can sing, but can't rap, a rapper can rap but can't sing, some can do both. But rap is not better that singing and vice versa. The difference is in the tastes of the listener. But some singer will think that rapper are not musician because they don't do note, and some rapper will think that singer are lazy because they don't write that much to make a verse (that's probably why there is so much hate on the actual trap scene, because they don't sing without autotune and don't write that much...)

Same with sample vs. composition from scratch, you can like one over the other, you can like both, sometime you can like one more than the other even if usually you like the other more, it depend on your tastes as a listener. But both takes skills and sometime some "composer from scratch" hate on people who use sample because it seems easy, and they don't see or understand the artform. The problem with sample is that most of the most successfull exemple are easy loop from old hit with a drum and a catchy chorus and that's it, and so it sound easy to do and like cheating because there's not much skill involve except the lead singer presence (kind of the same with modern trap).

If people like DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, J. Dilla, Madlib or Pete Rock where more famous (famous like pop star I mean) sample would probably be more respected as an artform. But unfortunatly, it's an art that get lost, because of copyright issus, young generation prefer to go the "easy" way and compose their beat from scratch, or use loop from soundbanks. But using loops is not real sampling cause it cut all the digging part which is the biggest work, and so now it seems like a easy thing to do, and most people now think that's what sampling is about.

And that's how you got people talking shit about Daft Punk using a sample because they think it's the same as Steve Angello using a Vengeance loops without modification...

But no matter what you do, how good you are, how unique you sound is, you will always find someone to talk shit about it
