I agree with that. Part of my life i lived in a comunist country and i know how "well" i lived. Until he leave the chair, the ordinary ppl in Russia will suffer. Don't worry, he will have acces to all www without restrictions.

Isn’t this just a fail safe? Isn’t it something designed so that if the regular internet collapses then RuNet would kick in so Russia can still use and communicate etc?!

As it is evident by the lack of defining what a "security threat" is. In its plain language, a "security threat" can be anything. Even a song. You are totally right, unfortunately: This will be "Open Season" against all the individuals who openly disagree with the Regime.

It's impossible to totally disconnect the Russian servers from the internet.

It's just a national Intranet to reroute the path of data. Instead of transferring the vital data (not all data) from Russia to US and returning them back to Russia, they will do it internally inside the Intranet.

All other data will be untouched so don't worry about the accesses to the global internet.

By the way who can bite the bullet and deprive himself of Russian chicks? If so, there will an international uprising against the Russia's politicians.

Yes communism is scary in this world...But censorship is becoming universal,in Europe we lose of our rights a bit more everyday.

 

My friend, I don't want to go off topic here but as bad as some people say that the U.S. government and its laws are, they are better than those in many countries. Russia, 117 prisoners of conscience. North Korea, you can't watch foreign films. Cuba, you can't speak against the government. The list goes on and on...

 

I know some people who lived ex USSR countries and in Russia and who now live in France and they all like Putin.
I've never lived in Russia but what Russia is today seems way better than what it was in the '80 and '90ies years.
I have watched an interview on Putin once and the reporter said the pension for old people have been multiplied by x8 !

Like I said I don't know Russians living standards but all what Putin has made isn't negative,don't you think?

I am not trying to go anywhere.I don't hate Putin especially.Yes he's not an angel (so far!) and this law we're talking about is scary but many Presidents around this world are very bad and dangerous too.

 

People, please read past the headlines. Russia is not disconnecting from the internet in November.

Few months ago Puting signed so called RuNet law. The law requires Russia to build its own proprietary internet. The two internets, the 'open' internet we all know and the new RuNet-internet will work in parallel. At least at first. The process includes creating all the required underlying infrastructure including new domain name structure etc. It will take a long time to build.

The official line is 'if the evil west cuts off our internet connection, at least we will still have our own internet'.

Yes, in modern warfare disrupting the 'internet connection' of your adversaries can be a priority.

But of course the criminal Putin regime has a hidden motive, too. Censorship.

Russian state is already actively trying to limit access to certain portions of the internet from the citizens. We have seen other authoritarian states cutting off access to certain social networking sites and even complete shutdowns of the internet when facing serious protests. In 2011 Mubarak of Egypt in desperation turned off the internet as the revolution of 2011 grew. This is because dissidents and protestors can effectively organize protests and share information on the open internet. Putin is scared to death of a color revolution in Russia.

The unofficial line is 'if the people of russia try to rise up, we can shut down the open internet and still have our own government controlled propaganda-internet for the people to enjoy'.
