I want to upgrade my Mid 2012 Macbook's ram to 16GB from 4GB. The company recommends upto 8GB of upgrade but I have read that in real life application it can go upto 16GB. Is it okay to go to 16GB and if yes can u suggest me which ram will give me the best performance ?

Yep, I can confirm 16g upgrade works well. Amazon has better options possibly but I've got 16 of Crucial memory and it's done ok for years. It's a 2012 though so I don't think top end ram would do much more if any then cheap stuff. 2012 is nice because everything is cheap and swappable though.

Re you saying since its a 2012 model 16GB will give me almost the same performance as 8GB or have I misunderstood you?

You can do that for sure... but I am warning Bro, sell that heat machine ASAP. You may suffer display related glitch soon. I hope your machine may work for million years but just beware.

I am still a little unclear as to what are you suggesting. Should I go for 8GB or 16GB?

Hey, I have a mid 2012 macbook that was running preety slow earlier at the start of this year.. It got to the point where I was considering buying a new laptop until i did some research and realized that I could upgrade my 2012 for only $200 bucks and ultimately saved myself $2,300 bucks in the process.like yourself i only had 4Gb of ram on mine, so I went to Fry's and got the standard DDR3 ram they have there which costed me $65 bucks for the 16gb's. I then went to Best Buy and purchased The SamSung 860 EVO 1TB SSD and paid $130. With these two components, a computer toolkit that has screws/screwdriver, this video for instructions on how to replace your old harddrive with the new SSD(
) and voila my friend.. your old 2012 macbook pro now runs like a fucking brand new macbook.. i like to call it a supercomputer because it has literally taken my wait time from minutes to seconds when it comes to downloading, opening programs, making music. if your doing it to make faster for music production or adobe shit, definitely get at least a 2tb external harddrive to keep the computer running as fast as possible and not cluttering it up with junk.. and thats it.. totally recommend you do it..

I am aware that switching to SSD will help with speed but I am kinda on a budget and can only afford new ram. Will only changing my ram to 16GB make significant difference for some heavy music production?

The 16gb ram IS recommended and should give a noticeable boost in capabilities. As others have mentioned an SSD drive will really speed up the mbp performance also.

the ssd upgrade will make a bigger difference than the memory, go for 16gb if you can and start saving for an ssd, i have the same mb pro, mid 2012 and that ssd made a world of a difference. i'm now looking to upgrade the memory.

why should he sell his 'heat machine', cleaning the fans every now and then helps a lot in keeping the temperature at normal levels

Would the 16GB work well with the two 500GB SSDs?

yeah ofcourse, there's no reason why it shouldnt work well. btw 2 ssd disks could be a bit faster if you use one for the system and one for, for example, samples or kontakt libraries

There's no connection between RAM and HD (SSD). You need the HD to store your software and RAM to load it.
