Start of this song has a superb worn out tape effect on the pad synth. How do I it? Tape Saturation plugins are not good enough to imitate this.

Try combo of Sknote Roundtone 3 (lo-fi or low speed dirty models) + toneboosters reelbus 4 or even 3 (wear, rusty dirty model etc.). It does the best.
VHS emulation of sound for NI Reaktor. Can be found on sister site. Btw it is free as i know.
Goodhertz Wow control is also fine for such old tape machine style.
Try IK Tracks 5.2.1 Tapes, Hornet Tape, Slate VTM, u-he Satin, Black Rooster Audio Magnetite. All these are studio quality tape emulations, not so lo-fi.
LoFi tapes also: Audiothing Reels.
And yes, XLN audio RC-20

Sounds like plain tape hiss to me, one could use just this as a layer

and then process individual tracks to suit the aesthetic.

 

really like the intro!! great tape effect, definitely something very lofi sounding.

Best way to do this. Its really just background noise no need for any plugins. Also i think the tape hiss is sidechained and ducks everytime the kick hits

I guess I'd like to sample my own? all the ones people posted are great but they are so authentic I dont think your going to get the effect your looking for.
maybe take the Hiss youtube layer that with waves then maybe even the RC-20 for tuning in the color.

What your looking for is more dramatic then i think one Tape sat plugin can do.
And some stuff like the RC-20 can be so odd with their effect.

Done with 10-15 minutes: overprocessed, oversaturated, a lot of Wow&Flutter, aged worn tape, destroyed in the dust, made in China, re-recorded from another re-recorded cassette tape etc. etc. (joke)
But it is all plugin emulations:
Pro-Q3 (slightly highs boosted), Reelbus 4 (dirty old killed cassette), Roundtone 3 (further tape rape), Wow Control 3 (final kill and destruction), Pro-Q3 (some light equing with added highs), pro-L2 (less than 0.5 dB Gain Reduction). Don't remember what was the order of first two tape-plugins, maybe Roundtone is first, then Reelbus, then Wow. Reordering gives extremely different results. Project saved, plugin chain also saved, if you need.
Source: mp3 320, single from discography, probably old CD master, with high dynamics, very quiet, but too HiFi sounding (probably early digital recording to CD from original HQ studio tapes or so). But I killed it to death.
