I have some plugs I want to install on my studio computer... but wanted to do it at home. If I remove the hard drive and take it home... will they fire up and work when I place the drive back in? (I use both Mac and PC)

**oops... I forgot to mention I plan on putting the Hard Drive in an external casing... If that means anything

no ofcourse that wont work, just install them. even with ilok you have to reinstall them

 

Which plugins? Different plugins use different authorisation methods. It depends.

 

As long as you're talking about the os drive and assuming it work with no problems with both machines then yes.

Don't forget that different machines require different set of drivers that may not work in another computer or create all sort of bugs and blue screens.

It depends. As usual.
Plugins with niLok may work when you use a usb key.
Other plugins most likely won't work. Some o register the plugin against the network adapters MAC address (e.g. Waves) other use a code calculated from several items built into the PC. These challange codes calculation isn't an industry standard, so that you can't recalculate it easily.
All in all it's an idea, but not a good one. ;)

BUT most legit plugins allow to install the software to more (ilok 3 times, SWAM even 4 times)...), than one computer. Why don't you just install it an authorize it.

 

I was just trying to save some time. I thought it'd be nice to sit at home (in front of Netflix!) and install them. I could just drag my (@) 250lb Mac Pro home and up 20 flights of stairs... but... the heck with that! A 240lb Mac Pro and 19 flights I could see... but not the former (uh... I am exaggerating just a bit here folks... before ya'll start sending the stupid comments... not getting humor)

 

That could be the case if vendors would all use a standard to bind a license to hardware. But they don't. Everyone makes his/her own silly "protection". Most of the time only the legit users are bothered by it. The others use K'd software.
This is why I use k'd software altough I own a legit copy.
