What is warez ?

    Hello.
    I have been going through a lot of threads and I have noticed the word warez being mentioned a lot, and I was wandering what it means. Does warez have anything to do with this forum or the A****Z site ? Am I living under a rock ? Please explain....

    it's just a catch-all term for pirated software

    It's a contraction of "softwarez".

    A brief history/etymology why: back in the day the "scene" (not just pirate, but music and demoscene as well) of underground computer geeks were using the cool "leetspeak" or 1337 (elite -> leet) which often replaced "s" with "z" (greetz etc.), and because it was international, non-anglophones often used the term "softwares" (even though software is already plural in English) which of course got turned to "softwarez" and eventually just "warez".

    This turned out to be a handy distinction: if it was pirated or otherwise underground, it was "warez", if not, then it was just plain "software", and this term has stuck.

    "Warez" (pronounced "ware - ez") was the last name of a man in the mid 1990s who hosted a huge BBS (bulletin board service) full of pirated software. To this day pirated software is still named after him. :like:

    What happen if you post a warez link: your comment is cleared and you receive a warning with 1 warning point. Once you receive 5 warning point you are automatically banned.
