I hate to be the rain on your parade, and even though I like the idea of this kind of thread and the fact you are all having a great/proud/emotional time making your lists - no one cares - I have read some of your lists, but without insight and reasons they don't look any different. Thank you you are the only one with Mozart´s Requiem on the list.

i would recommend everybody to listen Mozart´s Requiem conducted by Karl Böhm or if you like it slower by Sergiu Celibidache.

for me this is the purest music

Me too. The only other choral work that really hits me on that level is Bach's 'Mass In B Minor" - especially 'Dona Nobis Pacem' (which begins about 6' 55''...):

Thanks to @Yellow Raven (and all posters) for the thread. Even if I'm familiar with 90% of the items, the other 10% being recommended by musicians that care about stuff means I'm bound to find some nice new goodies exploring what's been listed in here.

Not sure what being cynical added to this thread but I'll take your "insight and reasons" comment as a positive suggestion.
So, instead of a favourites top ten (which I wouldn't know how to compile)... here's just a few tracks as examples for me to woffle about.

What grabs my attention?
[1] is it the 'listen to ME' musician-performer-ego (and who cares what they play)?
[2] is it the writing-composition (and who cares who plays it)?
[3] is it the lyrical poetry (and who cares about the soundtrack)?
[4] is it something that just grabs me by the balls?
Could be any, or all, or a mixture, of the above - according to mood.

Examples and comments
[1] The 'listen to ME' musician-performer-ego
Some musical egos have great 'feel' and 'passion' even if they don't play that well.
Some musical egos play virtuoso level and bore me to death.
Some manage to be virtuoso plus feel plus passion and then it's really magic.

[2] When the writing-composition is the main feature
Three versions of Claire De Lune, Piano, Orchestra, Guitar. In all three cases the musicians are obviously brilliant. They are NOT pushing their egos up front saying 'hey listen to me'. Almost the opposite, they're trying to keep out of the way and let the composer's work breathe through their fabulous skills. And if a composer (Debussy) can assemble a bunch of notes that are as brilliant as Claire De Lune, then that is what I want the musicians to do, leave their personalities somewhere else and let me hear the magic of the composition.
All three versions are (inevitably) beautiful. When a composition is this good, I would even enjoy (but not prefer) a machine playing it!

[3] Lyrical poetry (and who cares about the soundtrack)
An entirely personal bias... for me, more often than not, lyrics get in the way. I love the human voice as an instrument, but I don't care much for lyrical poetry in my music. So no examples from me here. I respect that lots of people feel exactly the opposite

[4] Grabs me by the balls
I wouldn't call any of these 'touching my soul' but I love anything that can can just hit me in the gut and make me pay attention.

Don't care what they're singing about either - the voices are just awesome.

The ddoctor argument is not unfounded.
So here is the explanation of my choices.

Bach BWV 1043 and Vivaldi's Stabat mater: The perfection of baroque writing. The search for a world order that speaks to me even if this order is a vain attempt to deal with the chaos of life.
Led Zeppelin: a reinterpretation and reappropriation of the blues that touches perfection.
Yes : The fusion of rock and classical influences served by outstanding musicians and singer.
The enchanted flute... a staging and a performer who, in my humble opinion, touches perfection. Not to mention the brilliant composer...
Joe Cocker and Marianne Faithfull: the encounter between exceptional compositions and equally exceptional performers.
David Bowie and Jacques Brel: magnificent and poignant lyrics served by perfect arrangements and poignant performers.

To be perfectly honest, I could put a lot of other things in this top 10 and my choices could even vary from one day to the next.
