Why am I always wrong about everything?

 

When a nutter has a world view that is as deluded as the one starting this thread they have already demonstrated that rationality means absolutely nothing to them. They are 100% immune to any amount of sanity, any amount of clear thinking, and they will certainly just see your list of valid scientific techniques as just a list of mumbo jumbo.

So, for some light relief, I might as well pull your leg instead....
I'm accusing you of behaving irrationally, because you are offering clear thinking and expecting the nutters to respond positively, when they obviously never will.

But the sane members might learn something from your list (I did), so thanks a lot for that.

 

Science is overrated. Don't believe in science. Believe in politicians and priests ... and random nut jobs on the internet. They know the Truth™.

 

The truly great thing about science is it doesn't require belief. From an early age you learn that one plus one equals two. It doesn't require belief. As we get older concepts become more complex and if we don't understand them it should not mean we shun them in favour of simple explanations. Before Stephen Hawking died one of his biggest fears was the current trend of not trusting experts. Youtube gives everybody a platform for their opinions. Opinions are not always facts. Critical thinking is needed now more than ever.

Firstly, I agree 100% with what you're saying but not with the 'word' that you're criticising.
You say we don't need 'belief' but I think what you're saying is we don't need 'faith'.

We all need 'beliefs', can't function without them, and we all hope that our beliefs are true (true beliefs = knowledge) and sane people are always prepared to keep on revising their beliefs in the hope that they get closer to knowledge.

'Faith', on the other hand, has been described as "a licence to believe the ridiculous".

I do not like faith, and yet, all of us actually need some sane kinds of faith too. I can't be 100% sure that the sun will rise tomorrow. It's a pretty safe bet, and I feel rational making that bet, but it's unprovable so, reluctantly, I have to admit that it's an act of faith on my part to trust that I'll see the sun tomorrow. If a rational person admits to that tiny role for faith, the nutters will misunderstand that concession, and turn it into a license to believe garbage - you can't actually win an argument with a nutter.

 

One plus one doesn't equal two. There is no clear evidence that it ever did. That's just what the governments want you to believe and Math forces young kids to repeat over and over again until they won't even question it anymore. God never said, that one plus one is two.

(And in fact, one plus one equals 10, as everyone should know)

If you say "strawberry tastes better than chocolate" and I say "chocolate tastes better than strawberry", then let's just agree to disagree and we can all get along just fine. (that's called social reality).
But If say "gravity doesn't work on Sundays" and you say it does, then this chummy "let's just get along" attitude won't cut it.
A reality check says that my "gravity doesn't work on Sundays" idea is pathetically wrong (that's called brute-fact reality).
