I have a roland A300 which comes with 9 knobs and 9 faders. i want to you know, mess around with synths but actually touch it. so i can pretend my keyboard is a synth

Which parameters would you assign to the knobs and faders?
I believe the first 4 faders would be ADSR? (so thats 4/18 parameters)

I know every synth is different But I'd just like a general Idea.

Thanks. this will do wonders for me and possibly[IMG] others

Cool it's got 9 faders; can do Hammond drawbars properly too!

Using Cut-off & Reso together in realtime always puts across a 'proper' synth experience! lol

Macros. Then assign anything and all to the macros.
Then assign the remaining knobs to different effects-parameters or dry/wet or bypass (toggling between 63 and 64 value) of different effects.

not to be a dick but... I mean, why you have to ask I don't get it... unless you bought something before you even have skill in using it... which believe me, I did a lot of.

The first few years I was into electronic stuff, I bought a shit load. I'm an addict so I immediately bought stuff I didn't know how to use, and never spent the time to sit down and really learn (as I had to get high... which took more time)... so I'd just fuck around with synths and samplers slightly, but spent more on acoustic instruments cuz they were immediately accessible.

Anyhow wow, tangent... yeah, you sound like you need more experience playing around and understanding synthesis, cuz it should be almost a no-brainer what you feel are important parameters to be mapped to knobs and shit.... like me personally, I give zero-fucks about portamento being mapped (which is my personal preference... I am not saying it is wrong.. no offenses please), BUT, definitely ADSR is the first four for me. I'd like to have adsr for both amp AND filter... but AMP I guess is most important I guess. (Unless it's for the Korg Polysix which the adsr controls both amp an filter... have fun man.

You can also find interesting params yourself by the good old "wiggle them with the mouse" whilst the pattern is playing method.

Once you know what you want to wiggle, assign to that and rock out maybe recording long passages. Later you could cut the best bits from that and use them.

it's just that i'd like to get the feel of operating a synth on my midi keyboard. I've tried watching tutorials on synthesis but they are currently the best thing going that puts me to sleep.

but yeah. i'm going to do what Satai recommended

either buy, or see if you can find a pirated copy of syntorial

It's a good little crash course in what everything does on a standard subtractive synth. waveforms, envelopes, filters, lfos. Understand what it means to change the qualities of those four things and you can use 99% of synths

Volume and filter adsr/envelop to faders 1 to 8. Depth of filter envelop to filter modulation on 9.
Filter and cutof on knob 1/2 master volume on 9. Maybe octave switches and waveform switches for the osc's on 3-8
