I predict there will be hype. And the hype will begat rubbish software. And the rubbish software wil begat buyers. And the buyers will begat dozens of inane and banal threads.

Well, that's what happened for the last thirty years.

maybe a bit grumpy outlook for a far future but here's mine:

return to completely offline audio world after The Great Internet Collapse

massive return to hardware, but this time using various DSP-powered stuff with full software control (something a bit like TotalMix FX with RME interfaces nowadays)

anticipative automated processing in mixing and mastering

procedurally generated sound content based on individual taste profile

ARM dominating over x86/x64 decades long current cpus architecture

realtime-adjusted sound calibration system so for ex. studio engineer could walk around studio or cinema visitor sit anywhere without compromise of balanced listening experience

Software wise I don't know, but I think a lot of people in the hardware trade are going to lament the passing of the LED gravy train. For years they have been selling us the same electronic shit with a different LED color..... :winker:

    70s Red
    80s Green
    90s Blue
    2000s RGB
    2010s White

I guess now its mini display panels, like Komplete Kontrol keyboards. Expect more of this...and touch screen devices.

The law of plugins states there can never be enough plugins, so I predict even more plugins in the future.

AI is definitely the thing to watch.
Everything that companies say about using AI (so far) is pretty much hype and bullcrap. Even the semi-authentic claims are referring to yesterday's primitive AI.
But AI really will be the like car that took 30 years to go from 0 to 60 and then 10 minutes to go from 60 to 10,000.

I want a box that passes the musical Turing test.
The Turing test is neat. It accepts that we'll always be hopeless about figuring out what intelligence really means so instead it takes a pragmatic approach. The Turing test is (roughly) If you're communicating with some agent and you really can't figure out whether it's a human or machine then who cares whether it's 'intelligent' - it's smart enough.
We already live with the joke version of the Turing test, whenever you're on the phone to a help line and you say "what the fuck this thing is so dumb it must be a human"

One version of a dream box that passes the musical Turing test will be like Band in a Box plus real AI.
So when I'm improvising with Band in a Box as my band, I don't want to stop and press a button to change tempo, I want the machine to just recognise that I'm changing tempo and keep up. If I change key, I want it to keep up and change key with me. If I want to change the style, etc, etc. And I'd also like it to not just follow me, I want it to behave like other musicians and push me.
I want to be in that situation and not be able to tell the difference - is it a real band or just AI software - don't care - it works.

When can I have it? Well, it's not a pipe dream. I think I will eventually see this.
Read about things like AlphaGo and machines with general purpose intelligence https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaGo
Crude summary:- notice how it took decades to program machines to beat all humans at playing chess. But now the contest is not about 'playing chess', the contest is about 'how long does it take to program a machine to play chess'. A general purpose AI that knows nothing about chess can build a human-beating chess machine in just a few days. It took humans decades.

So, it's taken many years to crudely construct the lovely scruffy Band in a Box program, but maybe a general purpose AI could transform something like that into a much smarter Band in a Box in a much shorter time period.

I'm looking forward to very near future where really surprising stuff emerges at speeds we never thought possible.
But in the music software world, all current claims about using AI are just the pre-real wave of marketing hype.

Update: then back to the debate about online or offline.
The first authentic powerful AI will obviously be on mega super servers (on-line only) but we all know that yesterday's super servers become tomorrow's wristwatches. And I do have real doubts that the Internet being decidedly NOT real-time will ever enable latency free realtime work - even if it's super smart there are physics speed limits.

You're right, how could I forget, I want my Band in a Box + AI to every bit as hot as Ex Machina. I'll have a dozen please.

well... to be honest I believe that:
1)some more new vst's and vsti's will offer greater sound production, however, there are going to be loads of crap products and AI junk as ppl said...so the subscription option seems realistic, although I really hate it lolz.

2)Also, there's a risk of some companies shutting down due to financial trouble, piracy etc and some other good products are also in danger of being discontinued.

    3) More simple touch products and equipment

    4) no major developments in DAWs and their sound engines, most likely only things about navigation and perhaps ease of use. oh and as some ppl said, the video editing thing is possible, although not necessary

    5) other unnecessary native plugins to DAWs that can do the same of other stock plugins

    6) lots of updates, bugs, fixes, presets and samples-without too much good content

    guess its all

Wish for more synthesis of all kinds of percussion instruments. Not only just kick and snare.
    A more steamlined Geist.
