Very good, spot on, description of the situation. I only partly disagree in:
I agree that Intel (also AMD) chips have serious issues, including that "platform ME" which is kind of a giant backdoor. But IMHO the big reason is simply smartphones and mobile devices in general run with ARM.

AMD Epyc is what you want, runs some linux distros and microsoft server.

The only problem is the new OS will not be compatible with Intel CPUs, nor will the software. So what OS and software you have now, you will have to use it until the end of time. Kinda like Windows XP, but worse, since there are still loads of software that works on XP. This will create a problem for companies like Steinberg which will have to recompile their software for ARM processors, and you won't be able to use it in a present MacOS.

What I said years ago about corporations is happening. Both Apple and Microsoft are falling apart in some way. Greed and stupid corporate mindset are killing them. Apple is moving away from classic desktop PCs, and Microsoft has fucked up Windows beyond recognition, and it won't get any better, just worse.

Guess which desktop OS will be the only one left which we could use for making music?

I see many statements in their manifesto that can completely apply to musicians there...

    I am definitely a Stuckist. :)

Window is fucked up or not, I don't have any problem using it for production. It might fall in the future, but not as fast as apple does.
BTW who said I was using MacOS. I remotley considering MacOS. LoL

i mean pros are starting to abandon apple in recent years for various reasons, if software manufacturers (adobe, avid etc..) arent gonna support their new chip in the best way possible - its really gonna end it all, but if they will, and there will be major performance boost or something compared to intel PCs - they are on the win, so i guess they kinda have nothing to lose and really think every step they do because THEY KNOW people are moving to windows (im soon to be one of those people).
however, there will always be hipster-girls-with-chokers-and-massive-daddy-issues costumer base that will buy a mac just because its pretty and fancy looking when you go to a coffee shop with it, and you know what? it really does look nice, so theres that i guess :dunno:

Last time they switched it was because Apple was going the clone direction in addition to the advancements with Intel. Now they have disabled hardware upgrades making all components Apple dependant and closing the door on hackintosh they switch from Intel. Apple hasn't been innovative with desktops since the iPhone became priority. I don't think people will have the same willingness for the new switch. Only a few software companies are going to jump at being Mac format with them upgrading OS's in short periods of time either making programs super limited like the 90's. They've made life hard for devs and users and now all current Macs will be obsolete and incompatible door-stops in a very short time.

    Exactly

OK, but when Apple has done the transformation to ARM, will they support Intel CPUs a longer timeframe?
e,g, How many years did they support PowerPC on their OS iterations after they switched to Intel?
So does Hackintosh really have a bright future?

Now I'm even more happy that I decided to not buy any hardware from apple and instead using mac os on a
separate partition and from time to time in a VM to test some mac related stuff.

I guess they'll keep a pro computer based on Xeon, or maybe turn to AMD Epyc server processors. ARM will be used for the fashion department (=Macbooks & the like). In any case many years will pass before Intel support is dropped. The new Mac Pro won't be released until the end of this year, so +3 years support minimum. Until then, I'm a happy Hackintosher..

I certainly hope so, @boomoperator. Yes, they certainly won't drop the support for x86 processors overnight. It will take some time. However, this stupid decision will put a nail in Apple's coffin, I think. Or at least now, when they've become so popular in music circles, they will again lose us, the musicians and producers. But when you think about it, neither Apple nor Microsoft care about content creators. Which is not surprising since we are like just a couple of percent of the computer users. Hell, Linux makers are also just focused on servers and Internet. Nobody gives a fuck about us.

We should really have our own OS. Somehow. An OS for content makers that is focused on performance and multimedia apps.

Maybe Haiku? Former BeOS. Or some nicely audio optimised Linux distro like KXStudio.

I really don't care what OS I'm running for making music, for as long as it's doing it well. Low processing latency, real-time OS, good multi-core support at the OS level and things like that. I'm actually quite satisfied with XP and W7, but they are losing support by devs.

Smart thinking, then if they pull drastic ppc/Intel swift transition tactics at least the comp is still useful as a pc

ARM is for handhelds and x86 is for workstations, it will take many years to get ARM as equal in processing power, also like said before tons of stuff to recode. It´s just a matter of ripping more money out products from stupid sheeples

  17. The fundamental difference between ARM processors and the Intel machines is that ARMs use Reduced Instruction Set (RISC) architecture to run very, very fast and cool, over external code used to perform complex tasks, whereas Intels use Complex Instruction Sets to perform more complex tasks on the chip, but are forced thereby to run more slowly and hotter than ARMs.

A good example of complexity is calculating floating point numbers, which Intels do using an on-board hardware executive, but which ARMs will typically do running external machine code. Another trick ARMs extensively use is conditional execution – this is where a machine code instruction contains an implicit test that determines whether the code is executed. This means ARMs can run code that contains no pipeline branches, because it’s faster to run over a code block without executing it than to bubble the pipeline by jumping to another location in the code.

This all means ARMs can outperform Intels where energy is at a premium (running off small batteries) and very large batches of complex calculation is not required. This tends to suggest that future Apples will be smaller, faster and cooler than current units, but not as capable at vast orthogonal computing tasks such as some audio tasks. It’s worth considering that iPhone/iPad music has been growing well, as many users aren’t trying to mix hundreds of tracks with plugins on them.

So the question may turn out to be, is the nature of music changing and is the classic “ProTools” model of audio working past its sell by date? I think not, in my opinion.

I am a pro. I am a Mac guy! I look forward to the new technology Apple is about to bring forth. My Mac does everything and more I need it to do and I will never switch to pc or hackytosh. Will there be some growing pains, probably. Will I be better off for them of course. So I look forward to the upgrade and change Steve Jobs or not.

Lastly, I don't know one Pro in my circle that wants to or did switch to pc from MAC. Once you go Mac you never go back! Lol. And on the
contrare'...I know plenty of pc users that now have switch to Apple Products. Interesting most here hate Apple and MAC Products.

Just curious...How many people that commented on this thread Love and use Mac or is the majority here pc or hacky users? Let's take a poll!

Ok, back to work in the Studio for me!

it's possible to do some serious virtualization, so it does not matter what hardware is used on host system, see:
