First of all, I think the moderators here mostly do fantastic work, and they should all have a lot of praise for that! They make this place work.

What everyone might want to consider though is the way legit threads here are often closed.

Here is Olymoons statement why he closed a thread just recently:

"Well, unfortunately, given where the comment about this simple humouristic thread are going, I'm obliged to close it."

I find this very, very wrong. The way to deal with members who break the rules should be to warn them and if they do not change, have them take a break from the forum. If they despite this repeatedly continue to break the rules they ought to get banned.

It is the people breaking the rules that should be corrected. Members creating legit threads should not have them shut down. This makes it possible for trolls that for any reason do not like a thread or a member starting a thread just trolling and being rude in i comments of the thread to ultimately have it closed. Is this what we want?

This is nothing personal against Olymoon, who is doing awesome work here and is trying to deal with a difficult problem. I am just starting a discussion on what the policy ought to be when some people troll legit threads. Is the solution to close the thread when the original poster has done nothing wrong but other people break the rules in their comments.

I do not think that just because you find a subject not to your taste, you should be able to have it shut down by wreaking havoc in the thread. If you report the topic and it is not shut down because it is found legit, you should not be able to find success simply by keep trolling the thread.

In an ideal world that would be true.
But, given that this thread was touching religious subject, we are not interested in religious not politic debates here.

Also, take time in account. I already spent 3 hours only on that particular thread, you cant see all the PM I have to answer and explain etc.. And I can use my time in more constructive ways for the community than clearing hate comments and warning members, were it's obvious that there not a debate, what there is is fight, and it's not even about music...

But I'm inciting @SAiNT to this thread, as may be I'm wrong.

Threads which are going to get closed are mostly deadlocked because of some members are not able to communicate properly. I do not see a reason why those threads should be still open then. Maybe the users who do this kind of communication will notice that it is not correct if threads get closed everytime when they're not communicating properly because this seems to be the main problem. :dunno:

To be fair Olymoon, you stated the following reason for closing the thread:

"Well, unfortunately, given where the comment about this simple humouristic thread are going, I'm obliged to close it."

If the reason for closing the thread was that topic itself was inflammatory, then you should state that, and then I might agree with you.

All I oppose is the notion that you can have LEGIT threads closed by trolling in them, and that is the subject I really want to have your opinion on and discussed here.

And, no hard feelings Olymoon, I really do think you are doing a great job, and if the reason for closing the thread is that itself is inflammatory, then I agree. It is no big deal, and no reason to have Saint look at that particular thread. The question I am putting forward is not about that thread in particular but if it should be possible to close LEGIT threads by trolling in them.

You do not seem to get the point that your view open a way for trolls to have legit threads closed by trolling in them. If the thread starter is found to be the culprit by posting a topic against the rules I have no problem have the thread closed.

I don't use to close threads often. But if it's only going to be hate comments, yes it seems the right solution.

A troll can be identified, and then it's a different thing, if I see someone trolling a thread I'd try to keep it open.. But remember, that in front of a troll, everyone have the choice to react or ignore... Obviously ..
But yes, I can take the wrong decision some times of course.

totally agree. it is insane how much time me and our mods spend to do everything perfectly. and i always tell my mods to work as robots, without any feelings or attachments, because otherwise it's just too time consuming and we can't expect that for free.

i agree that even though a topic could be started without any reference to trolling, due to some obstacles it could go wrong and sometimes it's easier to close it instead of starting a war and banning multiple members. Both Olymoon and Andrew are doing fantastic job and i couldn't be more proud.

Statistically I would suspect it to be the same four or five people most of the time who start this kind of posts because they sometimes love to start a thread they know ist would end up in heavy turmoil. I think it would best when thy need to approve it by a mod to start or answer to a thread.
That would be better than stopping them after the damage is already done.
Those people demand 90 percent of mods time in some forums.

Not astonishing that I have those members on my ignore list anyway.:snuffy:

Maybe we need a new Thread Category in here called: "Sarcasm, Irony and Satire" with a HUGE warning saying: If You Can´t deal with/understand neither of these three forms of humor, please leave it!

    Just jokin

Shit happens when you Interprets things and takes them personally.... the thread that started it all was (in mho) superb sarcasm - nemesis.... and I love it. When the burning cathedral was introduced it all became a bit more tricky ... even it was still sacastic and the point was spot on .... because it was related to a recent event that worries many people.... but it´s still not an excuse for starting a fire - period.

Moderating this place must be a nightmare at times and I admire the people who actually bother doing the job on a daily basis.... I know a lot of members disagree with a lot of the decisions being made by you mods - me too sometimes
But ask yourself a simple question:
Would I be better doing it, would members love me for doing it, do I really have the time for it?????

    My guess: NOPE!

Religion fights are restricted to Mac vs Win only on here, minor religions are not relevant.

I just want to add, to be clear, that I agree that closing a thread is, in most cases the worst solution.
Even though it can be the only realistic one sometimes.
