I saw an RME Babyface for $200 just the other day, the price for a used one way down now that the Babyface Pro has hit the shelves these last couple of years. This is great news for those who are on a budget but wish great quality and fantastic support of the driver and software.

Audient is king in the lower price segment

great monitoring, great pres, great build

lower than that focusrite i series
monitoring is just an adon everything else is ok

then come all the rest might as well just take what looks good imo.

    ok
besides that you said mic and line recording is what you want
is that just you? id4 maybe all you need

    you plus 1 person
or you and external pedals and or
experimenting with phone(s) stereo) through fx / aka generating your own sounds
maybe id14 or 22 (bonus: expandable i/o per adat)

Up for sale is a Revive Audio Modified RME Fireface 400, Firewire 400 and Interface that comes complete with our Premium Fireface 400 Modification package which includes:

A full Analog path modification for all channels of input and output using high performance Burr Brown and Linear Technologies Amplifiers for the utmost clarity, headroom, bandwidth and musicality.

This unit is in excellent shape and near mint condition and comes complete with manual, power supply and new firewire cable

We are offering a full 1 Year warranty on this soon to be classic interface.

On these we only offer one modification package which is our Premium service for the maximum clarity and headroom.

These interfaces like a lot of RME stuff, have a rock solid clock and are very reliable but leave a little to be desired in the audio path.

Most Designs by RME use 4560 opamps which have very poor performance characteristics for audio and are generally only used in consumer grade gear and so needed an upgrade.

The 4560 opamp is a slow opamp with very little detail and a poor slew rate which leaves the audio sounding midrangy, boxed in with low headroom and little clarity.

Our modification remedies this using premium amps carefully selected for their desired function thruout the entire audio path.

The results are stunning and sort of like switching from an old 1990's tv to an LED, modern tv in terms of the audio picture.

Contact us on our Web page for other modifications or if you want to hear more about the modifications:

    Reviveaudio.com

On the input stages on these we use High Performance Burr Brown opamps for a warm punchy front end with excellent response and musicality.
On the output stages and headphone amps we use Linear Technologies opamps which offer a very flat response.

These opamps also have excellent headroom and bandwidth making them perfect for monitoring and mixing due to their excellent and accurate flat response.

This makes for easy mixing every time.

A Power supply modification was also performed for maximum bandwidth and to accommodate the additional Current draw from the new Performance opamps.
This includes a whole new power supply

Compare our cost to our competitors and read the reviews of our modifications, or hear the samples!

For those that will inquire the current price for our premium analog modification on these is $550 with free return shipping and offers an excellent Price-To-Performance ratio.

With the modifications we get a lot more bandwidth, lower noise, cleaner and larger audio with a lot more headroom.

Overall musicality is improved significantly and the audio image becomes a clear, smooth and well defined just like you would expect from a Revive Audio modified piece.

The modifications take these classic consumer units to the professional level!

    Sale includes:

Revive Audio Modified: RME FireFace 400 Interface, new Firewire 400 cable, box and Power supply.

If anyone's still interested in a really low-budget but relatively good mono preamp / stereo interface with USB I/O, headphones out, phantom power and direct monitoring, the best deal seems to be the Behringer MIC500USB.
You get a few preamp simulations, with and without limiter, as well.
It's 16bit so you have to take care of your audio levels but it does have an on-board LED VU meter just for that purpose.

I'd go for an Audient audio interface in your case. Excellent preamps, easy to work with, and the price is OK. Just lovely interfaces!

    Cheers!
