hi, well i know some music theory but im stuck, im working on a track and im using some midi files which are labled D# so how do you know if its D# major or D# minor? and what mode its in, i use push 2 but it only has flats and no sharps, i know all the usual major and minor scales, if its D# is that major or minor or is d# minor, any help would be gr8 thx

 

Big letters are usually major and small letters minor. But as you know all the usual major and minor scales you know that there is no D#-major. So the question is where is it labeled? What labels the scale of this midi-file?

Actually d# major does not exist. Eb.
Look for the chords. If the g is natural its Eb major if g is flat, then its Eb minor.

 

E natural? That looks like its c# minor
But only 4 notes... it could be many things.

 

got an app on my phone and the only scale i see with those notes is D# Phrygian

 

Those 4 notes can be many things.
D# phrygian is the 3rd mode of B major

 

Just some suggestions:

1. There are programs like Scaler and Midi Player 5 (which you can download for free here: http://falcosoft.hu/softwares.html#midiplayer) that inform you about the scale with a click. You load the midi file, press the scale button and you get the information.

2. Because I am a bad keyboard player, I hate black keys. I usually transpose such midi files to an easier key using Synthfont2, which you can find on the sister site here: https://audioz.download/software/win/146249-download_synthfont2-v2100-laxity.html. With only 2 clicks you can transpose the whole midi file from D# to D or any other key.
(Of course you can do that using your DAW, but this is much easier!)

Before I learned the scales this app helped me tremendously. I highly suggest you check it out. It's called Piano Companion. It's not just for piano. It will help you to identify scales and chords, make chord progressions and has a nice wheel of fifths.

Also, unless a scale has a m in it, it's safe to assume it's major. Minor scales will always have a lower case m in the name (i.e. Am).

As someone previously mentioned, the name Eb is more commonly used instead of D#. Seriously dude, go grab yourself a wheel of fifths and study it. There's a lot of useful information you can learn from it.

It's B major key

 

1.Bmaj
2.C#minor
3.D#minor
4.Emaj
5.F#dominant
6.G#min
7.A#min7b5

 

The first 3 notes D# are tonic 3.D#F#A#C# chord
Then the F# is V7 ,F#A#C#E
Then it goes down to E ( same chord
Then it goes down to C# the9th of I

 

Now you can build it out in different ways.
That first one I gave you is common consonance and dissonance .
But you could organize it differently also
Depends what your ear likes.
Let's say you wanted to organize it on UNITY
Instead .
That type of structure works like this.
E major on the bottom octave .

And then
C#minor
D#minor
F# dominant
A#min7b5

Can all be played in top octave while the EMajor chords rings out on the bottom.
This means you never have dissonance , only consonance.
This is UNITY
It means those top chords options are all just flavors of EMajor the whole time
