It has SSL on the label but is kind of like saying, in relation to any of the classic offerings from the company, that this is "my mom's cousin's uncle's cousin, sure, we are related!". Though, without ever havig lisrened to it, been in the same room or actually know anybody that has one, I am going to assume that it will sound good, but it has been created for a very, very specific price point and is being slickly marketed to the target audience. It bears no relationship where it counts. The two mic pres have no input transformer, the compressors are not anywhere near the same and the eq is dumbed down. If this were a "real" SSL with the same trimmings it would out of neccessity cost probably 5 times or more with original preamps, classic compressors, a finer infrastructure, high quality pots, faders, capacitors, cable and the like. For comparison sake, their XLogic Alpha Channel will cost you $1399.This is not like a clone, it is a dumbed down version. It would be akin to buying a $50,000 Ferrari made for the masses, it would probably be ok and everyone could say, hey, I own a Ferrari.

Although not a factor in quality, will the SSL Six still be made now in China or Oxfordshire, England?

Just sayin'.

According to rear panel it is Engineered in the UK. Assembled in China.

One thing I did noticed reading the specs was its operating temperature wich can run in the mid 80s (F). Already one customer noted that it is "warm to the touch". SSL replies that "SiX’s SuperAnalogue audio circuits are designed to run warm and SiX contains a lot of electronics in a small space. SiX is designed to cool front to back, so ensuring ventilation inlets and outlets (front and rear) have clearance is important to reliable operation."

 

They are 2 different animals so it would be unfair to compare them unless we are talking about sonic characteristics. Sound wise, I don't think there is going to be much difference in EQ and Dynamics. Softube did a great job with Console One. I have not heard SIX but own the C1 and have experience with the real SSL. Good things about the SIX are its 2 SuperAnalogue preamps, its 100mm faders and everything except the headphone jack is fully balanced. https://solidstatelogic.com/studio/SiX

Edit: I rectify that to say that I think there is going to be big difference. After reading the manual, and talking to a couple of users I can say with confidence that this is not a genuine G Series mixer for $1500. Better get the Console 1 andsave yourself $1000.

What is the difference between a balanced stereo input and a “Fully Balanced SuperAnalogue Stereo Line Input” ?

 

one is made up by soldering 3 wires, and the other is made up by advertizing bollox.

 

Fully balanced signal path from start to finish. An entirely differential balanced signal path from input to output; the audio signal never unbalances. It is done by providing identical internal signal paths for both the "non-inverting" and "inverting" audio signals. It is said to yield 3 dB better dynamic range.

I think there's going to be a huge difference in EQ since the SSL SiX doesn't have one. Just sayin'.

 

Which Softube mixer are you referring to? The Console 1 is only a controller for a software channel strip plugin. There is no representative SSL hardware involved. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

You made a good point. While SSL claims that SIX has "Essential versions of SSL Channel EQ and Dynamics" it contradicts itself, at least on paper, by claiming that SIX offers a new two-band Channel EQ which curves and frequencies were selected by its team as the most musically useful for a wide range of sources.

 

I was thinking about the Console One.

 

I don't know what to say. At first I was amazed, thinking "woow, finally a nice little excellent sounding console from SSL for the mortals", but then I looked at the manual, and I think they've cut too much corners there. The EQ is almost a joke, as well as their implementation of G-compressor that lacks attack, release, and ratio controls. Its specs look pretty good, so as a mixer it might go really well with the crowd that has a couple of outboard hardware pieces and want a really great sounding little mixer. If they made it just a tad bigger, sported a really useful EQ with a parametric mid, and compressor controls, this would look far more serious, and they could stick about 500 quid more to its price.

Anyway, even though I'm a bit underwhelmed by its features, and my little console is more useful than this [and just a couple dBs noisier], this is a very useful piece of hardware for some people - the ones that want a little submixer that can do loads of things, and have a couple of outboard hardware they'd like to make use of. I like a lot that it's fully balanced, even the inserts, so you can connect some serious pieces of equipment to it without worrying about the signal degradation. It's pretty well thought out, if you don't take in account what I said about the EQ and the compressor. The summing feature is a great bonus. So I'd give it a pass, but it's really not as amazing as I expected it to be at first.

And it looks just as damn sexy as every other SSL piece. Says the fanboy.

 

@SineWave The more you read how SSL has tried to "trick" potential buyers into thinking that they are getting a bona fide G Series mixer for $1,500 the more absurd this whole thing gets.

Exactly what I thought once I saw the price of the Console 1.

 

Exactly what i thought! Looks cheap, technical specs are below mackie stuff, but hey, it's ssl! Let's sell it for more than a grand!

 

I can see the target audience of "home studio" and "bedroom producers". SSL is still SSL, but I sure would like to test it out.
Fortunately I have access to the real thing (4000G console with 40 channels) so I'm good for now.

Size does matter!! This should’ve been twice the size.

The first second I saw this I said, wow…interesting, but then, disappointment.
This unit should be twice the size, more professional - with ALL the missing components and then I would have been very happy to pay even $2500 for it!
