I work with copiers. But I have been designing our service management system recently so at least I can mix in some development work into the grind.

 

i sweeping floors all day, in the meantime i sell bootlegs of asex members music content...i hacked them all...

 

I feel it ...I used to work as a Network Engineer. Made Googles of money. Did the whole college thing, and thought I hit the jackpot with Cisco. Ended up hating it after I delved into the "big business-like" atmosphere for a few years. Off to the side some audio magic happened, and I said bye bye bullshit. Now I get to create all day and night, and live in what some would think was a fantasy world, full of seemingly otherworldly goodness. Now my imagination is in charge, and the white collar world is light years away. But I have to thank my miserable past, because it put me where I am, I was in the right place at the right time, literally. And I took a chance, and flew that rocket to the moon Alice. Not so much money anymore but I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams, and I'm never crawling out of this rabbit hole...

 

I work as an audio engineer now (completely accidentally) cos I know Cubendo and err.. that (knowing that Cubase exists!) was legit the only qualification I needed? I have found out a lot moar about audio recd / editing in that DAW now, from a baseline of (weirdly) knowing next to nothing! But I do work freelance (main job rly) writing atrocious muzak for ads and stuff. I used to work as a graphic designer (like everyone else it seems =) but my eyesight failed too much to continue w/ that =(

I'm a professional (session) musician. I play the bass guitar and it's been (and still is) very satisfying for nearly 30 years (so far).

 

I've always worked as a session player since teens, 30 years ago, but by 19 decided I needed to know about live sound engineering and was lucky enough to work getting trained on the road as an on-stage monitor engineer, sometimes f.o.h, with one of the best f.o.h. engineers from the UK at the time.
This helpfully also lead to working with bigger names as a session player.
Some publishing deals over the years too, where the material became mainstream.
Had to walk away from a number 1 artist back in '04 due to her drug problems, now dead, and really started disliking that inner sanctum. So sometimes it's not about the money at all.
So now it's just a mixture of gigging, teaching, writing, whatever. Yet I have great contacts.
So fulfilled by music generally (and now we can all have it in a box; something I never imagined in the '80's!) that I'm happy enough to keep it real, so I've also done many other, rather lowly, unrelated jobs, either through choice or when I've been desperate for cash! (Stacking shelves, care-work, v. humbling!)
I wasn't going to respond to the post because I feel it's like blowing our own trumpet, but I guess it's nice to know a bit about one another. And I'm really liking this scene and feel an affinity, so I'd like to be there for people. I used to watch the threads from afar, as a non-member. I really wish I'd joined years ago!

Incidentally, I also have tried to make the jump to the graphics/animation side, due to it always being a thing I loved. I grew up watching my late father edit, and then direct, films. I even could have gone that route, it was on a plate for me!, but I was already promoting and gigging by 15 so I didn't. And then he died quite young. Kind of realising now that it's a steep learning curve if I want to be as proficient as I am with music production, so it's more realistic for me to leave it alone.
Some of my father's colleagues in tv and film had jumped ship from the music industry, and back again, so I realised there are lots of options once we have the skills. And some of them had worked on the biggest tracks we know prior to going into tv or film, so it's all contextual, relative to the moment, I guess.

Hi Spy........ I was just worndering (cuz I am seriously planning a move to Cali.) is it really difficult to gain employment in the studio scene
there? I imagine it is quite competitive.. I would love to hear your insights on that... as its always good to know what i'm walking to.

Making living with music is super difficult. Maybe it's because when in studio.. I mostly focus sweeping floors there.

 

I negotiate purchases of expensive laboratory equipment for a big company, so, well, yeah, not at all (sadly), but at least I get paid well and I have a lot of free time (I can leave the office early and nobody bats an eye). Also, no one can stop me from blasting Gorod or Gojira through my headphones during the day.

My whole income comes from teaching music in schools, private guitar lessons, gigs, renting myself and my studio as recording engineer, mixing and mastering. Unfortunately I never sang Toto's songs.

I make mine with music have for 20 years... I do however have a few side jobs other than studio work that involves repairs on musical gear of all kinds \m/ Ive had my days in the grinder tho remodeling homes roofing and factory work as a young man ;) Still to this day i try to stay in shape as setting at a desk takes a tole on your health lol I just recently lost my Wife and life long companion to Kidney failure so its just me my studio and my work >>> Music

 

curious, what genre would you produce if you just didnt give a sh%t about anything and just went for what you like?

My work is related to music. I work on the radio. I am currently helping a friend of mine who is writing a Product Manager Resume. We struggled for a long time to find an application for a well-written resume and found it on the website https://resumeedge.com/samples/product-manager-resume-sample.
