I am normally a bit of a crap RTFM kinda person and learn better by watching and parroting or doing. I am gonna make more of a conscious effort to read the manual for the Virus Ti2 though, but just wondering if anybody had any tips or advice on where to start and what to learn to get the fundamentals for this synth in place.

Really hard to know how to answer this. Ive been a TI user since V1 and although I did go through a period of manic sound creation, I never really got past the basic knowledge I'd associate with programming my Minimoog. I understand the Oscillators, Filters, Envelope Generators, hell, I even worked out the Volume knob! (hint: right makes it louder)....but for those presets that dive deep into the matrix and endless modulation possibilities, I am still clueless and I suspect reading the manual would only give me an aneurysm. In short, I now have a TI2 and I mostly use it via the software, which is idiotic since it's hardware and I'm always wishing many of my soft synths had knobs.

    1. go to ebay.com
    2. make an add asking atleast 250 more then what you bought it for
    3. sell
    4. buy a different synth with similar options but not used in 90% of todays music

It's actually not that easy. I've never found a power cable that was a good fit. Just bought one from the US for $60 that does nothing. You put it in the back and it should be tight, yes? But no, it barely touches the sides. Is like ummm....

download the software and install the virus control centre...run via usb then check its up to date, ive had one for years, i now use it on pc via mystery islands controller and midi with audio out, usb is ok, but its temperamental and does awful drop outs sometimes, so midi is safe if your writing a lot, but the software is great when editing...but not if live etc...i love it, it doesnt need to sound like everything else, and generally if you dig into it a bit you can create awesome sounds....enjoy!!

Start with an init patch. Bare saw wave, no ADSR. Start playing with the ADSR and filter then gradually introduce yourself to new things as you discover them. Preferably during the learning ditch your computer and just play on a keyboard. Grab some headphones and give this fella a couple of nights, should be up and running in no time

No, no, don't listen to the others. Send it to me, I'll go through every single page, tweak every parameter and in 6 - 24 weeks I can tell you everything you always wanted to know about the Ti2 but were afraid to ask. [IMG]

You have to christian it by putting that manual somewhere close to you and making some patches from scratch, so you will be able to learn even the most evasive things about it. Well, that's my custom with anything new in my setup. There are always some special things you only find in the manual, no matter how easy to grasp the synth is. OK, I'm not talking Juno-60 here... LOL TI is definitely more complicated than that thing.

And the most important thing: Enjoy! :headbang:

Use soft electrician tape on the plug until it fits perfectly. That's an old technician trick.

What if you want to sound like 10% of today's music?

simple, follow the instructions/dont buy a virus, get a microwaveXT, get a novation peak or ultranova, get an elektron (something). there are so many alternatives some of which or so heavily underrated.
i had a microwaveXT and a few years later i bought a virus b, years later i sold them both because i thought i got tired of them, to this day i still miss my ugly orange microwaveXT, the virus... well i did buy a virus b rack a few years back and sold it again within months.... i wish i could afford a microwave again. i have a microQ (limited edition) now (the last one that was still boxed, the holy grail, the long lost box in a warehouse they found years after it went out of production)

anyways there are so many synths out there that are overlooked because of the hype around the virus and that's all it is to me, a hype.
