Hello everyone !

I decided to start producing Techno but I have 0 knowledge and I would love to hear your recommendations.
I'm a long time Techno listener/fan/dancer/DJ and people tell me I have a great taste for Techno music and that I should start producing.

So here I am today asking you guys and gals for your help.

I have only my laptop Lenovo ThinkPad W540 which I think it's enough to run Live and I also have DJ headphones Sennheiser HD 25 II. And Ableton Live..

Right now I'm low on budget but I would definitely invest in good Speakers/Producer headphones.

I wonder what else do I need in order to produce good Techno. What VSTs ? Anything you recommend will be highly appreciated <3

If you haven't produced anything yet or played around a bit, I suggest you to trial FL Studio and to play around a bit. You shouldnt invest in something you don't know for sure you like and have the persistence to produce something. Because the process of music creation is an not so easy and very long task. Or play around with Ableton but if you say 0 knowledge. I do not know what you have done yet

 

I have installed Ableton Live Suite 10.0.5 and that's it for now . I'm waiting for your recommendations what to do next so I can start trying out things

I've been listening to techno since 2009 and I started mixing in 2010-2011.
I'm in love with Techno and I want 100% to learn how to produce it.

 

1. download any BPM detector
2.take any song track which you like and use this BPM detector software to detect the BPM of your liked song
3. open Ableton put your song track in one channel with the same BPM
for example if your track on 140 then put in Ableton 140

4.now you can fallow the structure of your track .
* intro (from min 0 :1min)
* crash (1min to 1:20 )
* beat (1:20)
* timeline
* .....etc

5. go download good distraction vst
one example. "Ohm Force Ohmicide"
or go to some website and check them one by one till you find what you need

6. go to youtube find tutorial's study the basic
and from there move on!

 

So many quality synths can be used but just to name a few:
- Spire
- Sylenth
- Massive
- Serum
- Elektra2
- Synthmaster
- Bolt

I'm of course omitting a zillion others that might also suit this style...

 

Thats the problem. You can tell pretty much everything as technical or as spiritually you want because there isn't really a reference point.
And if someone mixed something he must have some knowledge...I don't know.

 

Everyone uses Ableton to make techno these days, it's sickening. Like a bunch of cloned songs that all sound the same. I call it 'Ableton Drumcode', Adam Beyers only poison. Go for cubase or logic, you'll at least get a different sonic tone that will give you some uniqueness.

Get some of the most popular synths. Get some relevant sample packs.

Learn how to get them into Ableton or whatever. How to install VSTs, how to load them in Ableton, route them through mixer, la la la.

[Personally I find Ableton a bit 'odd'. In your position 10/15 years ago I tried a few things and plumped for FLStudio (Fruityloops). Worth trying a few DAWs to see what works for you. Ableton has a peculiar workflow imo. Doesn't work for me. If it doesn't work for you, try something else.]

Just try and have fun and then, later, start looking into the things you find you need to. YouTube is a great resource - you don't need more tbh.

What's the problem mate ? When I created this topic I had 0 knowledge, now I have some knowledge and I will start learning how the things, that the people suggested, work... If there is other way to learn music production , please guide me...

Thanks for your recommendation ! I chose Ableton Live to start from somewhere but I won't stick to it if it's not the most advanced as people say. I think that every DAW is a tool and if you learn how to use it to perfection you could get a unique sound.

 

Doesn't matter what you use.

There are no recommendations that will mean anything.

The only thing that matters is if you have an idea and the will to actually get it down and recorded.

Making music is like sex, you've chosen to get down with Abelton but now you are here asking what kind of cologne you should wear, what coulor should the sheets on the bed be, or whether or not you should bring you own personal lubricant. The truth of the matter is Abelton is a pro and has been around the block more than a few times:

I've heard people say this, but I've also heard people say that they can tell the difference between flac and lame 320 kbps. Also, my friend Jeff said that he once took a 90 degree turn doing 75 mph in his old shitty Buick.

 

You mean that if I was going to export to a Wav file the exact same mix from Ableton or let's say, Studio One, you would be able to hear some differences between both?

The DAW is only a tool to express your ideas: Feel free to use Ableton if it's the one you feel more comfortable with.
For example, I tried Cubase and Reason (a long time ago) but I discovered that Studio One's workflow was the best for me and I've never tried anything else for the last five years.
