Hi guys i'm a newbie on musical production and i have troubles to choose a daw. I want to create Heavy Metal and i've been looking cubase 5 because is the last version that can be pirated. Also i have installed Studio One 4.
But i dont know which one is better for me and the musical genre that i want to do. I know more things in Cubase because i used it to test my Laney Iron Heart Studio, but his appearance is horrible, its like office 2003. However, there is a lot of tutorials for this daw on youtube, even exclusive for Metal.
What do you think guys, should i use cubase 5 or studio one 4?

PD2: buy an updated cubase is not an option because im poor.

 

Reaper. It has every feature you would ever want, one of the best on system resources, and it's the most affordable DAW on the market. Not to mention it's really easy to use. IMO. You can download and try it "full featured" for free as well. https://www.reaper.fm/

 

I would rather go for bandlab cakewalk

for me reaper feels like a halfmade daw

do what i did - try all daws first, yes it takes a while, but its worth it

 

@MiMo69 You are asking us to make "the choice" for you. That is almost impossible. Every member has a DAW that he or she likes, and that would be the one they are going to recommend. You are going to end up more confuse by the diversity of answers. DAW choice is subjective. Every other week we get a similar thread. My answer is always the same: the best DAW is the one that you are the most comfortable using. In other words, the best DAW is the one that you know best. You said you already have Studio One 4. Learn how to use it. The choice is yours to make, not ours.

 

Reaper.... the most powerful by far. After you use Pro Tools, Logic and Studio One, you'll feel like you have a new computer with Reaper. The difference in what you'll be able to do before running out of CPU power is mind blowing. I couldn't believe it, after using pro Tools (which I love) for years.

 

It depends on what you see is most important for you :
Workflow and getting Ideas layed out quick > FL Studio
Live Performances and Creativity > Ableton
Modular Workflow with Racks > Reaper
All-In-One Solution > Presonus Studio One or Logic Pro
Mixing/Editing and Mastering > Pro Tools
Never wanna grow up and wait years for updates - Cubase

I for example use FL Studio, simply because it fits my workflow (fast sampling, Trap / HipHop driven, like a sketchpad)
I know there many other and better DAW's out there, but its like this :
I like my old Bike, yeah its a bit rusty, yes - there are better Bikes and with more Features, but that old fucking bike just feels best, and gets me to where i want to be EVEYTIME .

Plus if you low on budget , FL gives me the most for the buck, plus there was a point were i said to myself - you're a good Beatmaker, but leave the Mixing and Mastering to others that know what they doin (just leave some Headroom for the old farts), saves me time and ressources, and i can purely concentrate on being creative in the Process of filling a blank Paper with Ideas and Visions

The last thing i want to point out is what your friends use, when you were around them falling in love with this music sh** , it was just natural for me to buy a DAW most of my friends used, cause i already got the hang of the GUI early (back then it was FL Studio 3)

The most imortant thing in the long run for me was actually BUYING shit, to support the Developers, and to worship things, and really dig in and check out ALL the features makes you appretiate it that much more . Try but also Buy all hail R2R im out

I've used everything over the years. Apple destroyed Logic, like they stuffed Final cut.
Bitwig is absolutely amazing. The Midi timing, the flexibility, the routing, the sound, and the workflow is both intuitive and clever. It's so much more user-friendly than Live IMHO. I also love Studio One. Presonus have really thought that DAW through. Its like they took the best of Logic, Protools and Ableton and built Studio one. The thing I love about Bitwig though is the management of sounds, libraries, midi, modulation, and effects. Great Hardware integration, its the sound designers dream.
In the end.. its what you are comfortable with, I've heard amazing things from the most unlikely software. One thing, whatever you choose, dig deep. I come from an era where Stem mixing was the only option and multitrack recording required Protools or similar hardware (my last tools HD system was $27K.. now with native systems, the world is your oyster. Try Bitwig..its a very powerful bit of kit.

Well, op may be looking for advices to help him take his own decision, and /or, based on answers here at least decide which one to try first.... He is not necessarily asking for someone else to take the decision .

 

Could you explain how you want to use your DAW.
Are you mainly going to record live instruments?
Will you use a lot of midi or not?
Metal is a quiet difficult genre to mix, do you prefer a DAW with already loaded effects, like eq, comp, etc... Or do you plan to chose the effect form third parties?
Also which are your computer specs?

All this is important as it may point to the right direction.

 

Huh?! It's every daw in one, über-customizable...And SOOOOOO cpu efficient.
(I use Ableton Live though, once Reaper gets a session view i'll switch)

Jk. We can't decide for you. There are tons of great DAWs out there. You gotta find the one that works for you. Once you fully learn it, that will be the "best" one.

None of them! I loathe them all. Depends on your application mostly. Is it purely for personal/home studio use? Then any of them. Is it for professional use and collaborating with studios? Then it has to be Pro Tools that's what the majority will use and compatibility and sharing of sessions is vital.

 

I love REAPER. I think it's an amazing DAW with no frills. Not to mention the incredibly low CPU + RAM usage.

 

If your poor. Then use Reaper. It's the best option for you.

Personally, I would never use. considering I have been using and updating Cubase for the last 12 years.
But reaper is functional enough to get the job done.

Reaper is great, but for a beginner I'd recommend Studio One. The best balance of complexity/features.

Some members here have made great metal tracks with Studio One, but the genre doesn't make a difference between Reaper and Studio One. perhaps it would if it was techno/electronic towards Ableton/Bitwig.

 

The op is specifically asking "should I use cubase 5 or studio one 4?" Had he or she not asked that question I would agree with you, and would have omitted that part of my post.
