Of course there is.. UVI Workstation

    Correct.

Then we have all the hardware romplers/samplers of 80's and 90's, Kontakt is superior, Omnisphere 2 is, for seriously.. Nexus is nowhere near pinnacle of romplers

Not sure if OP is trolling or what

just a remark, not just synths makes the difference could try Reverb 3 from the Track Essentials 3 pack (whole pack is 20$) from https://www.toneboosters.com/tb_trackessentials_v3.html

extremely nice in this genre, quite similar than the inbuilt one in Spire just even more dense

    worth to check

Never regretted buying Nexus, does what it's says on the tin. Used it countless times when I want something down fast.
Avenger, ditto to purchase. Was like getting the dev version, still puts a smile on my face every time I use it.
They'd definitely be on my list if I could only have 5 vsts.
    Massive
    V Collection (slightly cheating)

I do however regret buying Omnisphere. Amazing synth, just never sat well with my workflow sadly. Gathering dust next to my MCSE books (also gathering dust).

I must say, this is actually a great conversation to have.
I am a Reaper user, so having quick sounds is important.

We, who have been on the scene for a lil while know that Nexus is only a Rompler.
It is praised by Trap and EDM beat makers as an Oasis of sounds.

So let's be understanding of this frame of reference.

My first experience of having a lot of cheap but useful sounds was with Edirol Orchestral.
I did a few experimental pieces with it and was actually surprised at how quickly I was able
    to get some ideas out.

2nd was Roland Sound Canvas, which provided me with some simple stock/GM sounds, which are useful
when laying down sound ideas. Shux, sometimes I'd keep the sounds and just add distortion, reverb,
delay, etc. to add character to them.

    The Kings:
    --------------------
    - Omnisphere: (rabbit hole) and actually the greatest collection of sounds available in a single softsynth
    - Kontakt: (Sampler Extraordinaire) Best for specialized libraries.

I have Omnisphere and Kontakt, but lately I've still been looking for some simple VSTi's that contain
the general, traditional instruments of yester-year (bread and butter). Here's a list of small yet wonderfully useful
VSTi's that I hold in high regard:

    Bread and Butter (traditional)
    -----------------------------------
    - Roland Sound Canvas (GM)
    - E-Mu Proteus VX (GM +)
    - Korg M1 (traditional instruments and retro synths)
    - Edirol Orchestral (quick orchestra)

    Actual Nexus Competitors (Romplers)
    -------------------------------------
    - Lethal Audio's Lethal
    - Intial Audio's Heat Up

One my say that the Bread and Butter tools are not high-quality.
But what does that even matter? In today's digital age, most of our music is not "high" quality, more like high bitrate when
mixed down. Nowadays, there's a lot of digital distortion as well as lo-fi (thanks nostalgia) effects that help thicken and
and liven up the thin, stale, synthetic or shallowly sampled sounds.

Anyway, Nexus is too over-used. I want a lot of categorized sounds at a cheap cost (low cpu and not a lot of storage).

    Hello, General Midi.

Better than rompler only hardware synths, live instruments, vsti synths, vsti samplers (with manual support of adding what you want from your libraries) etc. Romplers are such a tool like "sitemaker with our premade graphic patterns", less creative, more hdd memory and sound can be changed only in cosmetical way... Tons of GB of prerecorded stuff... Better to have 10-15 best vsti synths and tons of presets

OMNISPHERE is incomparable for the supplied presets. Great outa package.
Its like Superior Drummer of synthesis.

I have heard bad musicians make great synthesisers and vsti's sound terrible as sure as I have heard great musicians make very ordinary synthesisers and plugins sound amazing.
It is like talent and creativity, it comes down to what you do with what you have. Each of the above-posted synths or emulators, vsti's etc... serves a function.

When I was a noisemaker like reignerrr , back in 2009 or so, I used to think like him about Nexus, since then I´ve tried a lot of other (much better) vsti´s and Nexus has been uninstalled for years with no regrets.

Vps avenger is great, give it a try. Its demo is great too. Nexus is great as legacy reFX was one heck of great company past then , now every devloper doping sounds.

Nexus, we agree, is a bunch of cheesy presets. But everybody has used it here and there. It has it's place. Cheesy arps, dance piano garbage and triton sounding acoustic guitars. No audiophile wants to admit it but we all used it. Examples. https://equipboard.com/items/refx-nexus-2

Diva deserve some what less incomparison to omni.
Kontakt is in other league, instead its like max for sample and as good as library it runs.

    And probably wrong comparision.

Reaktor or massive would have mattered more here.
