Hey,
I just bought new studio monitors and now I have the same problem everybody has when he/she buys new monitors:
How and where should I position them?

I bought the Equator D5...

Now to get some good help I made a digital version of my room in Google Sketchup...
I made some pictures so that you guys will have an overview, and I also uploaded the skecthup-project, so theoreticly you can position them there exactly where they shoudl stand.
Now here and overview where my desk is:

I thought maybe I should move the desk a little bit away from the right wall, to have more space for the monitor... What do you think?

I hope this will help to give me some good advises

Oh, before I forget:
All other speakers belong to my normal audio system... Its not that important where they stand because they arent nearfield monitors...

Overall make sure you sit in symmetrical position between your monitor speakers.

I can guess that they must be the greyed ones ?

At a first glance and first impression, and in case that you like to leave them at the same place as depicted within your image, you should perhaps to raise them a little, at least to the height position of your ears, for that obvious reason, but also because they seem to be rather small (in size !).
As you're certainly a 'normal' person, therefore that your ears are (more or less !) at the same height that your eyes within your head... a good reference point could be your computer screen (in case it is placed in an optimum position for your vision).

As an example :



and don't forget to leave a sufficient space between them and the walls of your room ! *yes*

Try also (if applicable !) to make a perfect 'Triangle' among the 3 most important items in this case :

- Left Monitor
- Right Monitor
- Your head !

(By 'perfect Triangle', I mean that each of its sides must be of equal length).


ADDED AFTERWARDS :

If I'm not wrong, The English name of that kind of Triangle is : 'equilateral triangle', where each of its sides is of 60°.

No a friend will build a recording room, I can master there...
And Im 18 now, so I will move out soon... Not that soon, but I wont stay at my parents home forever and I also buyed those monitors for the future...

Try to avoid the corner of a room and its bass trap , it might be possible to turn the desk to wall at the right. Head at the middle of the room. (where the carpet is).
Foam on the wall from the lower half of the bed to 1m beyond.
Thick curtains + foam on the opposite wall.
If there's no hole at the back of your speaker and use reasonable volume, you don't really need to be far from the wall.
Keep a very regular triangle, and put your monitors at ear's height.

As within others previous images that I saw the full size of your room was not so clearly apparent, here you have a suggestion :

 

So you want me to move my desk right in the middle of my room?

I'd move your desk to be in front of the window (in the middle of the longest wall), also a fair bit away from it. If you can afford it get one of those wooden blinds for the window. You can hang a carpet on the opposite wall. Since you're on a budget trust an Ardekan, it really ties the room together!

Make sure that the speakers form an equilateral triangle with where your head normally is, and put them on spikes or foam (like Auralex). Actually, a box filled with sand should work well too.

Position is important with the Equators, some people say they have a small sweet spot.

There's an old test cd by Alan Parsons floating around which has lots of test tones, etc.

I see some floorstanding speakers next to your bed. Are you doing multichannel mixing or something?

 

Yep dude, you have to. Monitors /SUB too close from walls generates very bad audio responses. To simplify it, they exaggerates/ multiplies the sound source, into something not really useful obviously ( too much bass, no precision in med/high frequencies, Delays … plus depend of course of the walls , house etc…) So yep, forget it.

Try in the middle or front of the wall with the windows, with around 40 cm of space btw wall and speakers. Then as already said above, bass trap on the corners, phonic treatment on almost each walls with DYI stuff :
