I have a couple of old book cases I'm about to throw out .however, whilst waiting in my hallway to go to the tip, I thought whether I could get any used out of them by repurposing or hacking them into something else.

Any suggestions for a good use for these in a small studio space?

Dimensions are about 80cm tall, about 65cm wide and about 15-20cm deep....

it's a shame to throw those shelves out man! you can do amazing stuff with those pieces of wood if you have a jigsaw a screw driver and a couple of hours to waste

check this dude's post here http://blog.dubspot.com/ikea-studio-hacks-build-creative-space-budget/

if you are short on space and need a shelf to have your monitor on top and to slide your midi keyboard or mixer or ableton push beneath it so you can have your mouse and keyboard in front when doing officestuff/browsing/gaming instead of musicmaking you could build yourself a couple of shelves out of that wood

If you take out the shelves in the middle part you can craft some useful wall-mounted absorption panels like these ones (not the towel thing, the model)

I did think of using them as racks by hacking them shorter in width with a jigsaw and buying some rails. There's 74cm internal space, so that would make each unit a 16U or 17U raack. However, their depth is only 16cm, so doesn't give much depth space for rack mounted gear obviously. I had thought about removing the back off one of them and then bolting them together so they'd be one unit but deeper with 32cm depth.

I am thinking of buying some synths etc in time, and at the moment I'm considering using them to rack mount desktop synth modules I may buy (which tend to be less deep), such as the Behringer Model D, Pro One etc.

If you fill even fill them up partially with books and/or fiberglass insulation they will work well to tune up your room. Books are great in the studio to both break up reflections as well as absorbing sound.

When I saw those it reminded me of this old article in FM:

You could make something similar. And from what I see, yours are pretty well made.. I guess it would be a shame to throw them away. I have an entire wall covered with something similar and like @Lois Lane mentioned, filled with books..

Is there a need for the equipment to be fully enclosed besides dust considerations?
I've made shallow racks before...so long as the base is deep enough. Usually a lot of the weight winds up being towards the front, but it also depends on how you want to stack stuff, controls-wise.
I like the stands and risers I see here so far, too.
