Production is where the "art" is born, whatever gives you a good feeling is great

 

My mixbus has an eq on it, comp at 4:1, usually a tape plugin, and lately the Intensity plugin doing very very little. Sounds awesome.

And also a limiter, bringing the whole mix up to -8ish lufs. Pretty middle ground for what I hear coming out in all styles.

When sending tracks out to mastering the only thing coming off is the limiter.

Limiter on while mixing lets me hear what information will be lost. Does the snare still come through? Kick transients? Guitar solo or vocals causing distortion? Chorus causing the song to become smaller? Bass eating up the mix?

There's no rules to this, so do whatever sounds good and helps you sound better.

I just think it's nice to know how your track will react when it is brought up to a loudness everyone else is expecting to hear.

Compressor fast release is for controlling sustain and not transients.
You control transients with the attack of the compressor.

And the limiter is for increasing the loudness,the overall RMS level.

When composing my track I put a limiter only to be safe to never exceed the 0 dB by accident.But 99% of the time the limiter is never working.

and lol - "No Sexual" on correcting what I was writing at 1AM... I didnt think someone would cry over dbFS dbTP LUFS RMS, PPM, DLM, VU etc.. I think you missed the point maybe? cant add plugins to MIXBUS? read up "MIXBUS Compression Basics"

PRE-MASTERING - dont use the limiter... (if you are worried about blowing your speakers, adjust your master volume from 0 to audible)
if you send limited\clipped audio to an audio master, if they are good, they will tell you it's no good and to turn off limiting before resending. dont worry too much if it peaks into the yellow

MASTERING - use it if you want... (if you have too much peaking then adjust your gain levels, etc "-12 LUFS") <--Am I Clear "No Sexual"?
if you are mastering for yourself, try Console EQ, comp, tape sat, for example...
* Waves Audio - AG TG Mastering Console (pretty decent to shape audio curve, Schep73 (Colours the signal like a Neve 1073)
* Fab-filter Pro-C
* Newfangled Audio Saturate - a good plugin for clip/limiting also (i use around 8db Drive to 60% clipper shape for example)
* iZotope Ozone 8 + Neutron 2
(Ozone 8 is the all in one comp limit exciter eq etc etc, neutron 2 virtual mixer on your master bus, and add neutron 2 on the other channels)
