This is something that worries me a lot. As soon as I have to abandon Windows 7 it's time to either use an offline machine with Windows 7 on it, or move over to Mac or Windows 10. Linux would be awesome but not too many commercial plugins and libraries run on it, although I guess for basic music editing you can use the open source DAWs it offers.

Does anyone have any experience with ReactOS? It's supposedly an open source windows replacement built on the NT code, and its goal is compatibility for windows software. I was wondering how it ran with Audio applications. my guess would be that the applications might run fine but that drivers and latency would probably be not so nice.

I think this is a serious topic. If we think about where everything will stand in ten years, will we still be able to use Windows 7 for those who would want to use it? How long will we still have access to second hand hardware that is compatible with Windows 7? Would Linux catch up to the Win and Mac environments in any serious way in that amount of time?

Migrating to Windows 10 for a main productive system just doesn't seem like a good option for me, at least not as long as things are as they stand now, with automatic updates that break stuff without the user's control over it.

PS: Would Windows 8 be an option for the time being? It's gonna be supported for a few more years but it seems like barely anyone is using it.

@XImpalerX What is it with you? As Jimmy Buffet says: "Is it ignorance or apathy?" Hey, I don't know :dunno:and I don't care.
On every thread I participate you jump not to help the OP but to contradict what I have said. The sole purpose of posting is to help the OP. It is not to get into a pissing contest with another member. I have been very polite towards you but since your ignorance is as remarkable as your knowledge, before I avail myself of the "Ignore" option, I dedicate this well-deserved farewell thoughts to you:

    1. Discussion is an exchange of knowledge; an argument an exchange of ignorance
    2. Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.
3.Whenever you argue with another wiser than yourself in order that others may admire your wisdom, they will discover your ignorance.

You do remember that you reported me to the admins for helping people right, and automatically accused me of trying to sell software lol. (That's you being nice?) Now you know how it feels to be singled out for "only helping."

Now if you take a look at what I said to you, I asked "Are you familiar with Incremental or Differential backups? and if so, what is your reasoning for not doing that?" (You responded to simple questions sarcastically. If you can't handle questions, that's on you.)

I did spend hours researching your legal question for you when no one else did, so I can't be that bad right?

    1. "Have patience. All things are difficult before they become easy."
    2. "Nothing is worse than watching ignorance in action."
    3. "He that is not aware of his ignorance will only be misled by his knowledge."

    Grandpa gives good advice!

There is REAPER, Bitwig, Harrison Mixbus, and Ardour for Linux. All u-he plugins have been ported, LinuxSampler is nice, and the number of audio programs and VST synths for Linux is growing by day, so I probably missed some programs and plugins.

i still have old computer with DOS , win95, win XP. they are still running and will forever unless the hardware fails ...
make backups of your os-softwares-drivers's installation programs in case you want to make a fresh install,
and you will be able to use them as is ... but dont ever update ...
you will still be able to do what you where doing with them ( except connecting to the internet )

Windows backup system sucks! Go Macrium Reflect. There's even a free edition. I make daily backups and restore quite frequently for that way I can make all sort of experiments and then go back to the previous image. Use it for years, never faile me once. Reflect only backup clusters with data and restore only those that have changed, so the process is very fast.
